How are you going to run the Ion head? I would have leave it with BC instead of SMS and use it as an armored vanguard. As the point of proper flying wedge you should be able to 25% cover for the trailing units and insure a 3+ save even at cruise speed. Possible even a 2+ due to angled shots against side armor with 100% obscured front arcs to the firer.
