Dakka Campaign 1850 pts Obsidian Legion (Necrons) vs Tyranids (pics)

Dakka Dakka Campaign 1850 pts Battle Report
Obsidian Legion (Necrons, Other) vs Tyranids

I had some fun doing the last battle report, so I wanted to try another one of the game I set up with my friend this weekend. It probably won’t be quite as long as the last one since that took many hours to type up and post.

FLUFF
((Nomarch Bruticus was standing by, eagerly awaiting for the phase teleportation to activate in order to bring him and his forces directly onto the battlefield. The Obsidian Legion had recently arrived at the large forge world of Perdus, in order to track down the experimental materials of the Ad Mech that could be used to expedite the World Engine repairs. In the last engagement, his forces were able to capture data readouts of where the Cult of Mars was keeping their research and development resources. The first item of interest was several underground tanks of inactive living metal, located in the ruins of the old storage plots of a manufactorum. The Destroyer Lord Bruticus was intent on retaking it.
“Report Incoming” Overlord Cyclonus said, standing with his immortal unit on the adjacent pad. The up-link came alive, and the scout Night Scythe pilot stated: “I have a positive and a negative item to report. It seems that our approach has gone unnoticed by the imperial forces with all the engagements in the zone. Unfortunately, it appears that there is a strike force of renegade Tyranids that seem to be drawn to the targets”. Bruticus looked at the overlord, and stated “it would appear that if the bugs may have found some of the living metal deposits. We cannot allow them to harvest the material, for we don't know what sort of evolution that they could use it for”. Cyclonus responded “agreed, and we must move quickly, otherwise I am sure the humans will send response units to impede our mission.” A few seconds later, the teleporters activated, and Bruticus gave the signal for all units to teleport in….))”

The lists were as follows:
Tyranids

Obsidian Legion (Necrons)

(This was the list I have been running in the last few games, minus the scarabs, and giving Overlord Cyclonus extra protecting since he has gotten beaten down that last three battles).

Mission 4: The Scouring
Warlord traits: Bruticus got counter attack in my deployment, and I forgot what the hive tyrant got, but it was useless for him.
No nightfight on turn 1.

I win the roll for deployment, and chose the corner, and I also roll well and chose to set up first.
Battefield (during deployment):

Objectives (gold tokens): we each deploy three face down. I put my three relatively close together in my deployment (in the open on the right, in the ruins dead center, and one in the back corner just off the above picture). My opponent places one on my far left in the ruins, one in the ruins in the center of the map, and one in the small ruins in his back corner).

Necron deployment:

From left to right in the picture:
Warriors, 2 A. barges, destroyers, 5 warriors in ruins (with cryptek), 1 A. barge, wraiths with Bruticus (behind), immortals with Cyclonus and Lord, 9 warriors. I also have the scythe with 5 warriors in reserve.

Tyranid deployment:

From my right to left:
WL flying Tyrant (with 3 biomancy, priority power was endurance); hormagaunts; termagants; Tervigon (3 biomancy, priority power was iron arm); 2 biovores; Tervigon (3 biomancy, priority power was iron arm); 3 shooty guard; termagants; Trygon. He had his Doom in a spore and Ymgarl’s in reserve.

Overall pic after deploying:

We turned over the objectives ((to see how much living metal was in each tank)). On my side I had a ‘4’ in the middle of my right warriors, a ‘2’ in the ruins by the cryptek’s warriors, and a ‘3’ in the back corner by the wraiths.
On his side he had a ‘1’ in the center by the Tervigons, a ‘3’ in the ruins closest to the Trygon, and a ‘2’ in his back corner.

So far things were looking good for me .
He does not seize and I begin turn 1.

Necrons T1

After necron movment: (sorry for some blurry pictures)

Most stuff shifts up to get range. Most objectives were either nothing of note, a bomb (that never exploded), or the extra cover for the cryptek’s unit.

After necron shooting:

So I started off lucky. I downed the first Tervigon with 2 barges and destroyers (which was big, because next turn he would have gotten iron arm and it will not die), the other takes a couple wounds, and small arms fire and a lance take 2 wounds of the Trygon and kill a few hormagants. He also lost a handful of gants from the Tervigon dieing. I also got first blood for the Tervigon kill.
No assaults

Tyranids T1

After movment:

He moves up with pretty much everything, bar the depleted gants and toward the back ‘2’ objective. He gets Endurance from the tyrant as well as Ironarm (+2) on the remaining Tervigon. He also gets a good spawn roll, and moves the new black gants toward the destroyers.

After tyranid’s shooting:

Fortunately for me, his shooting doesn't do much. Only his Flyrant downs one destroyer, and the guard get two hull points on the left barge.

After Tyranid’s assault:

The gants get a charge on the destroyers, who kill one in overwatch and 1 in melee for none back. The gants hold.

So far so good, I haven’t lost any units yet, have the high point objectives, and have first blood and one of his biggest threats down.

Necrons T2

After Necron movement:

I decide focus most of my efforts on the right, since a flyrant in my backzone would be bad news (with the potential of Doom and Ymrgals next turn as well. Barges move away from the guard, Brute + wraiths move up (to charge the hopefully down Tyrant or help the destroyers). I also a risk and move up to be ready to charge the Trygon with Cyclonus’ unit, banking on MSS primarily, otherwise his 3++.

After Necron shooting:

Another big round of shooting for me (with some stellar rolling). The barge with 1 HP moved 12”, snapped at the tyrant, did 1 wound, and knocked him out of the sky for a second wound (ouch ). I also killed 3 warriors and a gant with arcing….oops. The rest of my shooting kills off the tyrant, puts a wound on the Tervigon, kills some hormagaunts/termagants, and peals 1 more wound off the Trygon. I also got slay the warlord for downing the Flyrant.

After necrons assault:

I lose an immortal to the Trygon’s overwatch, but make it in. Note, we played the combat that since I had 2 MSS (Lord and Cyclonus), that the Trygon needed to take two leadership tests, but would only hit himself once, and couldn’t use smash attack. He failed one of the tests, and wounded himself once. The warscythes then strike, and Cyclonus downs the beast, and the unit consolidates into the building (where his ‘2’ objective was located). The wraiths charge into the gants, wipe them out, both units consolidate back a couple inches.

Tyranids T2:

After movement:

So, my opponent’s bad luck continues. Since I just killed his tyrant, he doesn’t get the +1 to reserve rolls, and rolls two 2’s for both units. He move units up as seen above, and spawns more black gants to replace those I had just wiped out. The unit in his back corner hunker’s down in the ruins to secure the ‘2’ objective. He does get an Ironarm (+3) on the Tervigon.

After Tyranids shooting:

….And the luck continues. The guard shoot at the wraiths, hoping to insta-kill a couple, but I pass all my saves. The gants shoot at them as well, but I pass all my saves again. The biovores scatter off the warriors in the forest, and hit one base, but don’t wound. And the back left gants shoot at the immortals, downing one.

After Tyranid’s assault:

Hormagaunts assault the destroyers, and lose one on the way in. Between his rolling for (poisoned) attacks and my saves, I don’t lose any destroyers. The destroyers kill one model, but he manages to hold without fearless.

So, things are definitely looking good for me. I have most of his main threats down, with minimal losses on my side.

Necron’s T3

After movment:

I general shift around, getting some good firing lines for my shooty units. Warriors on the far left begin to shift towards the corner, to hold the ‘3’ objective once the game ends. I think I started shooting with the warriors.

After necron shooting:

I down a few black gants with the right warriors. I also nearly wipe out the left back gants with the immortals and back warriors. The barges unload, but can only manage a wound on his T9 monster, and arcing does a couple extra wounds to those nearby.

For necron assault, I didn’t get a picture, but I wipe out the remaining black gants with Bruticus’ unit after taking one wound. The destroyers beat the homogaunts by 1 or 2, and they get away.

Tyranids T3

After movement:

So, the Doom still doesn’t show up, and Ymrgals lose ½ their unit coming out of the forest because I have the warriors in there. Hormogaunts rally, and he gets another good spawn roll. He gets another Ironarm (+1) on the Tervigon.

After tyranids shooting and assault:

Again, his shooting manages to not do anything to the wraiths, and the biovores continue to not impress.
He charge the new gant unit in the wraiths, the Ymrgals into the warriors (nothing dies from overwatch), and the hormogaunts can’t charge. In combat, the gaunts manage to get a few wounds through onto the wraiths, but with Bruticus’ help wipe them down to 1 remaining (keeping them locked). The right combat, he does one wound to the warriors, they hold, and the one warrior gets back up.

Things are looking pretty dire for him. I have the game pretty much in the bag, but if he can keep the Tervigon alive he still has a chance.

Necrons Turn 4:

I didn’t get any pictures in here. I bring the nightscythe and and line up a shot on the gants that are hunkering down in the back. But I move up with most central stuff, with destroyers and left warriors moving onto the ‘4’ and ‘3’ objectives respectfully.
In shooting, with the less toughness of the Tervigon, I finish him off, killing off all central troops choices, securing the game for me. Since he had an opponent waiting for a Fantasy, we called it there, but allowed me to make some final turn 5 moves that he couldn’t have stopped unless the Doom did really good.

End of Game:

Status of objectives (he started cleaning up so most of his remaining units aren’t in the pictures):

I contest his back corner ‘3’ objective.

I hold my ‘4’ objective.

No one controls the center ‘1’ objective.

I hold my back ‘2’ and ‘3’ objectives

Finally, I hold his far left ‘3’ objective

I also have: first blood, slay the warlord, and line breaker.
Tyranid’s most likely would have gotten linebreaker with the Doom and/or Spore pod.

Final score:
Necrons: 15; Tyranids: 1.

Crushing Victory to the Obsidian Legion!
Post game thoughts:

Well, It definitely helps a game when the dice are going you’re way. I was able to get some good positioning, hug that 24” to 18” range, and unload. Getting each of his monsters down was critical, otherwise I would have been overwhelmed with gants with the poisen/furious charge aura, or started getting sweeped by his high initiative monsters. My barges did excellent, doing most of the wounds to the Tervigons, as well as the Tyrant. Getting first turn was also big, otherwise I don’t think I could have killed off a Tervigon with a min of +1 toughness, since I can’t stop his psychic powers. His army was definitely scary, and with first turn and some good rolls the game would have turned out much differently. I had a good time, and I think my opponent did as well in between face-palming over both our rolling (he was a good sport letting me grab some last objectives).

((Without any psychic leadership, the remaining bugs scattered from the battle, reverting to their basic instincts. The nomarch wiped the guts off his warscythe from the scores of bugs his unit had cut through. He gave the order not to pursue the tyranids, as he knew that the imperial defenders would be arriving soon enough. The legion secured all the deposits of living metal that the Ad. Mech. and hidden, and began to teleport out with their mission being a complete success. This was just the beginning of the targets that the Nomarch had planned.))

Thanks everyone for reading!

I find it harder and harder to read these Necron battle reports. More often than not it's 3 to 4 turns of brutal shooting and then clean up with little to no losses. Fun game for you, i'm sure.

That said it was a well organized report, the pictures were great, your army was very well painted, and it was a good (if wince-inducing) read once I accepted the fact that turn 1 signaled the end for the poor hive fleet.

Keep up the good work, we need more talented battle reporters around here.
