Right, I'm going to be playing my friend soon and he's using Necrons. Now this is his second game with Necrons AND the new rules. I've written two very similar lists that I feel are quite mean, what are your thoughts??

List One

HQ

Tyranid Prime = 110pts
PoB 10
TS 10
Regen 10
Sycthing Talons

TROOPS

30 Termagants = 150pts
Fleshborers

30 Termagants = 150pts
Fleshborers

ELITES

10 Ymgarl Genestealers = 230pts

10 Ymgarl Genestealers = 230pts

Zoanthrope = 120pts
Mycetic Spore with Venom Cannon 60

= 990pts

LIST TWO

HQ

Tyranid Prime = 110pts
PoB 10
TS 10
Regen 10
Scything Talons

TROOPS

30 Termagants = 150pts
Fleshborers

30 Termagants = 150pts
Fleshborers

ELITES

10 Ymgarl Genestealers = 230pts

10 Ymgarl Genestealers = 230pts

Doom of Malan'Tai = 130pts
Mycetic Spore 40

= 1'000pts

If he has flyers you do not have any answer to them. To be perfectly honest I am not crazy about this list at all. 30 termagaunts won't last if he is firing tesla weapons. They can't really hurt anything with their fleshborers.
Your elites won't show up till turn 2 at best and all he would have to do is is kill your prime and your gaunts have no synapse and will run and hide and be useless.

I'd suggest a tervigon so you can spawn free troops and have something on the board that will take some of the shooting.

Just because you add a lot of comma's doesn't make your punctuation correct.

On to more useful advice. If you know your exact opponents list you should have little issues. It is difficult for us to help you when you don't give us all the details. If I had to go with a list I would use the 2nd one. DoM can be pretty lethal. That being said that Prime will get murdered and your gaunts will run. Leaving you unable to capture objective or even able to kill anything. FYI every one needs Tervigons. Some will argue but I feel it is the most important unit in the Nid codex. YMMV

1'000 Point Tyranid List against my Friend's Necrons

Firstly, either of your lists are mean by any measure of the word.

Deathmaster Snikch wrote:
I know whats in his army cause my friend used to own them I beat them everytime I won a 2000 point game with one synapse(not a good idea, i only noticed it hlaf way through the game) and everything I mean EVERYTHING was shooting at it. I don't need Tervigons also he doesn't have Flyers

Just because you won one game with this setup doesn't mean that it's reliable in most cases. If this guy gets a lucky shot or just plays smarter than the previous owner and your prime is gone 1st turn then you might as well call the game which won't help him at all. Also your lack of synapse really limits your mobility in objective based games. If there are 2 objectives (one in each zone) then what are you going to do? By the title we can see that you are tailoring it for Necrons, but being that you didn't specify any details then there is no specific advice we can give.

One critique that I will give is that your yealer squads are large. If you hit a warrior squad with 10 yealers you are going to wipe them and die the following turn. I have had plenty of success with running them in 7 or 8 at the 2k pt level, but I've never used them at 1k. This will make you weak enough to finish off squads in the 2nd assault phase which is where you want to be as a nid player. Also go with toughness on the turn you charge to reduce casualties and damage output.

Secondly, what are your termagant squads doing? They can't kill anything with their weapons and since there is no tervigon around they are useless in assault. If they are both running up the field why not run 4 smaller broods or some variation thereof (15,15,30 or 15x4 etc)? I think hormogaunts or standard genestealers would also be a good alternative to the 2nd termagant brood. This would allow your opponent to fight different bugs (assuming he's learning here...) and gives you a lot more tactical flexibility. A unit of warriors might also be good here as they aren't too competitive and yet they would help with your synapse problem (and they aren't tervigons)...I have also found them to be more worth their points in smaller games.

Hopefully this came off as constructive and not rude and if it did not then I apologize. I understand this guy is new and you don't need to bring your most competitive list, but your giving mixed signals. You have a weaker HQ and troops, but your elites are WAAC...Any good player will ruin this list, but any new player can't be expected to handle 2 of the toughest assault unit in the game and a model like the DoM.

Re:1'000 Point Tyranid List against my Friend's Necrons

I own both armies (Tyranid and Necron) and I play them regularly.

The key to winning against a Necron player as a Tyranid player is to get in close combat as fast as possible and kill his troops. If he have Monolith, either send a monstrous creature after it or kill it with Zoanthropes. I would recommend Zoanthropes, they are better suited for the job.

You will need some monsrous creature in that list and better troops than the Termagants.

I would also suggest that you take a Tervigon along with a squad of gants, they are a must... their spawning ability is great and they can roll a psychic power on the telekinesis table. Also they are great at keeping an objective with their T6, W6. Also take a Trygon if you have one and at least 2 Zoanthropes. If he's got a Monolith (and I know I would bring one) those warp lance with become critical (as it's a S10 lance weapon). Also leave the Doom of Malen'tai and the Micetic spores home, they are overkill in this game, quite good, but too expensive.

Drummerboy point about having 1 big Termagants brood is quite valid too. More troops can control more objectives and 2 broods of 15 gants are better than a big one.

Also 30 Termagants = 180 pts, not 150 pts.

A big squad of Genestealers (or 2 if you can) would be great too, but do not take the Ymgarl. They are great but overpriced in a 1000 pts game. 10 normal Genestealers will be troops (scoring units) and they will be more than enought to go through Necron Warriors and Genestealers. Trust me on this, the Necron Warriors won't be able to resist a charge... that overwatch might hurt but if even half of a Genestealer brood make it in close combat, most of the unit will be gone in the first turn.

The Genestealers should handle all the close combat, infiltrate them or screen them with the big Termagant unit. Be careful with outflank, you can't charge with them the turn you appear on the table anymore...

Deep strike the Trygon and target his troops. Shoot with it in the turn it appear then charge them. Wipe the rest with your Genestealers... he won't know what hit him... .

Here's the list I suggest.

HQ

Tyranid Prime = 90 pts
Pair of Bonesabre
Sycthing Talons

TROOPS

15 Termagants = 75 pts
Fleshborers

15 Termagants = 75 pts
Fleshborers

Tervigon = 160 pts

10x Genestealers = 140 pts

10X Genestealers = 140 pts

ELITES

Zoanthrope = 60 pts

Zoanthrope = 60 pts

HEAVY SUPPORT

Trygon = 200 pts.

= 1000 pts
