100% Converted Chaos Lord of Nurgle on Palanquin

Honest opinion: I'd hate to say it, but the facial expression is a bit, well, goofy, and the proportions just look bad, and not in an "unnatural" or "off" way that can lend itself positively to a project like this. This is further compounded by the fact that your project seems to be utilizing up to 5 different aesthetic sculpting styles, and not utilizing anything to bring them all together. top it off with the kinks in the guitar wire hoses, and the whole project just feels sort of slipshod. With a bit of green stuff, the arms could be bulked out and made to fit the rest of the aesthetic you seem to be going for, but I can't seem to wrap my head around a configuration where the crab claw would look appropriate within the theme of the model.

The palanquin, itself seems to be a bit featureless, and could be well served by a bit more detailing on top, like a throne or other additional stuff surrounding the lord to better fill the space, and a lot more gribblies to carry it.

Onto the positive aspects of the model, the texture on the basing looks great, no denying that, and with a bit of cleanup, could be made to look amazing. Top it off with a bit of woodrot and texturing to complete the structural appearance, and you could be well on your way.

Re:100% Converted Chaos Lord of Nurgle on Palanquin

So your refusing to take his constructive criticism because he has no pictures of sculpting work in his gallery? (I think thats what you are saying at least) That's a little off.
I'd actually agree with pretty much everything that the guy said. The model itself is pretty cool but like it has been said, the face looks really odd, and the throne could look a little more interesting.

100% Converted Chaos Lord of Nurgle on Palanquin

Perhaps I've not paid close enough attention to this thread, but it seems that the OP is somehow not pleased by the fact that I presented my own opinion on the aesthetic qualities of the model, and that said opinions aren't the most positive thing in the universe? What are these threads for if not comments and criticism of works in progress?

I'm not a sculptor, I'd be the first to admit that, but the fact of the matter is that I know enough about aesthetics to be able to look at a piece and figure out, at least in my own eye, what it needs, and what, if anything, is just wrong with the sculpt.

You expect a chaos lord to convey a feeling of dread grandeur, to carry himself in a terrible and awe-inspiring way, indicative of his power and status within his warband. A Khorne lord should be mighty and imposing, a martial paragon and a seething mass of hatred and violence. A Lord of Slaanesh should carry himself with a certain subtlety and grace, with enough ego and excess to strike a mixture of fear and unnatural allure in his audience. A diciple of Tzeench should be mysterious, just slightly off, conveying a certain hyper-intelligent "wrongness" about him, unreal, predatory, but never direct. A Lord of Nurgle should carry a certain twisted grandeur, terribly malicious but mirthful, almost a king or politician, treating the battlefield almost as a parade in celebration, not of himself, but of the works of his surroundings. Most Importantly, all of them should convey a certain overt, or better still, implied, violence, with a sense that, at a whim, they have the capacity to butcher all that stand before them, in a manner as natural as breathing would be to you or I.

100% Converted Chaos Lord of Nurgle on Palanquin

It's kind of personnal preference I suppose. I, for instance, quite like the "goofy" expression. It lend's itself to Nurglings, and I like to think of this guy as like a child-minded super-nurgling, clapping and spitting and dancing about as the army sow's destruction. He's definately not the brains of the army, or the muscle, but that's not what nurgle is about. A Khorne guy with this face would be absurd. A slaneesh one, would be awful. A Tzeentch one, would be too weird. But this seems to fit nurgle in my eyes. Not every warlord has to be a badass, I imagine this guy as kind of an "Egor" style character to the hidden, true mastermind behind the army, ergo, nurgle.

There's a certain brutal intellect communicated in even the beast of Nurgle sculpt, a gaze of baleful intent. Mindless and gibbering is more suited to the spawn, which is little more than a lumpen mass of corrupted flesh. It is, indeed, obvious that we view the setting through different lenses, but one seemingly universal idea behind the HQ units across all of the armies is some sort of implied intellegence, be it granted by a higher power, or bred from necessity and circumstance. Even an ork warboss, or even the near-insane weirdboyz are evidence of that.

I see nurgle having a presence much like the hollow, sociopathic smile of an abusive parent, with eyes completely devoid of compassion, and a smile just slightly too wide to be completely sincere.

100% Converted Chaos Lord of Nurgle on Palanquin

I agree Dronze, but I don't think it's entirely out of place. Not every army has to be the elite said group has to offer. I imagine this lord is like the ugly stepchild of nurgle, rather than the greatest threat he has to offer. A weak henchman of nurgle, not his greatest champion.

I don't know the army this is running with, but if he is chaos space marines, I would fluffywise like to see him as a kind of second in command behind a greater intellect. For daemons, under the watchfull eye of a dissaproving great unclean one.

100% Converted Chaos Lord of Nurgle on Palanquin

I can see some merit behind that argument, and without context the comparison is limited to the view of the model, itself, admittedly, but even then, you have to contend with the Palanquin... This is a status symbol, a gift, a means by which to transport the favored and elite into battle. It's like Kharn's personal punching bag riding a Juggernaut into battle, or a grot getting leverage over a warboss and the warboss complying: it could happen, but it just feels wrong.
