New found irony in the role of good-guy <--> bad-guy

As I delve deeper into the mythos and lore of the 40k universe, I love the use of irony.

I wonder if this one is fully realized yet:

The Old Ones and the Necron's/C'Tan...

-- --------------------------------

The Old Ones would be considered good.

The Old Ones psychically empowered the servant races that they spread across the galaxy (to fight the Necron and C'Tan). The growing pains and psychic flaws of the younger races using these new psychic energie began to cause disorder to begin to coalesce in the Warp.

The ultimate fruition of this act by the Old Ones was the beginning of (or at least significantly contributed to) Chaos being born/formed whatever you call it.

(Ironic that the good-guy's plan leads to opening the galaxy to Chaos.)

-- --------------------------------

The Necron's and the C'Tan would most likely be considered bad.

The C'Tan devised a plan to defeat psychics by sealing off the material universe from the Warp. (The great pylons on the surface of Cadia.)

This plan would have sealed off the birth of Chaos from the galaxy.

(Ironic that the bad-guy's plan could have saved the galaxy from Chaos.)

New found irony in the role of good-guy <--> bad-guy

Yeah, that's kinda the entire theme behind the 40k universe. There's this dark sense of ott humor that permeates everything, which is directly inspired by things like 2000AD, H.P Lovecraft, possibly various B movies, and some other things that I couldn't be bothered to think of right now.

As my sig says:

"In the grim darkness of the far future, there are only bastards."

Hell, I guess you could interpret the entire setting as a deconstruction of Star Wars and Star Trek (whether or not its a valid theory is up to discussion; I'm just putting it forward).
The Evil Empire (IoM) is humanity's last hope.
The Jedi (Eldar) are a bunch of opportunistic dicks
The rebels will ultimately result in humanity's downfall
and so on...

The big question in Warhammer 40k is not who is good or who is bad, but from whose perspective you're looking at it from.

...Whoever said the Old Ones were 'good'? 40k isn't about 'good' versus 'bad', it's a universe sufficiently hostile that nobody has the luxury of being bound by codes of honor or common decency.

New found irony in the role of good-guy <--> bad-guy

A lot of 40k seems to be filled with "Oh man, if you had just listened to that other guy or waited 1 more minutes everything would have been fine."

Much like how Horus thought he was doing right by stopping the Emperor where if he had just listened to everyone else, none of it would have happened. If Horus hadn't of gone to the planet like everyone told him not too, he wouldn't have been nearly killed and the heresy wouldn't have happened. If Horus had listened to Magnus, none of it would have happened. If Horus had just picked up the F'ing phone and called Daddy, none of it would have happened!!
