I am sure this is the case with plenty of you out there. But, finding some time on my hand, I decided to dust off my Space Wolves and have at it.

My list consisted of:

Wolf Lord on a thunder wolf (completely decked out)
3x Thunderwolf calvary

Canis Wolfborn
10x Fenrisian Wolves

Rune Priest

Wolf Guard Battle Leader with Hunter

5x Wolf Guard Terminators

10x Grey Hunter

1x Dreadnaught

My idea, was to use the BL with hunter to increase my Rune Priest's cover save to make him almost invulnerable while he cast lightning bolt after lightning bolt--total waste of like 250 points. While the rest of the army advanced on whatever goals and objectives were on the board. In this case, a relic.

I am challenging what I guess is a pretty vanilla space marine shooty army.

My warlord gains the Feel No Pain special ability for everyone within 3".

Everything is looking good--to my limited knowledge of the game mechanics... poor fool.

Turn 1
I damage one of his dreadnaughts with my Rune Priest-- a ha! As I move, and the player I am challenging explains some of the new 6th edition rules in a fairly complicated manner--I end up with Canis and wolves in cover waiting to pounce on the following turn. My Termies in cover. But my wolf lord in the open, surrounded by grey hunters as meat shields--They all get Feel No Pain rolls.

My dread gets into cover with great fire lanes.

Then, my opponent drops a heavy ordinance blast on my wolf lord--and I find out Feel No Pain doesn't work against instant death. My bad. So my wolf lord and another 5-6 units are obliterated. Nothing else is really in range.

Turn 2
RP puts another wound on a dreadnought.

Canis finally have at a space marine tactical unit and rips it to shreds. That was fun.

My remaining thunderwolf calvary grab the relic--I figure they are fast enough to grab it and get back to the ruins where my RP and BL are hiding.

My Termies, being more CC than shooty, try to move into cover as do my grey hunters.

A second space marine unit engages Canis and co, who tear them to pieces as well.

The rest of the space marines move somewhat forward getting into position to annhilate me. His terminators charge.

Turn 3
RP is ineffective. Rolls a 1 with his living lighting. At this point I realize, 1). the space marines don't have anything that can touch him and I have wasted my BL. and 2) I have wasted my BL.

The calvary make a run for it, but can only move 6" when they have the relic--what? 6" is just enough to put them about 1.5" inches past a high wall which would completely obscure them and make them safe--however, their bases are like 2.5 to 3" and cannot stand on the wall. Not sure how we are supposed to deal with that, but we decided that they haven't made it completely on the other side of the wall and so are fair game.

The termies take assault the other terminators and fair well enough.

The grey hunters attempt to assault the dreadnaught and fail miserably.

By the end of the 3rd round, my TW calvary are gone, the greyhunters are reduce to 2, and the termies are reduced to 3. Canis is still fighting with 2 wolves--but due to some innocents on my side, he is left in the open facing to tactical squads who tear him to pieces--note to self, when playing a army where all the units are painted the same, figure out how to track which units belong to which squads, so there is no magical squad jumping.

Turn 4
Anyway, by the end of turn 4 I was done for.

Lesson learned: Know the rules! Know your opponent!

All in all, I like 6th edition. I am making some changes to my army list and will go at it again soon, I hope.

I think I took a 4+ inv save for belt of russ, but not a Look Out Sir. And now that I think of it, I think there was an assumption that everything was instant death, but I don't know that it was a S10 attack.
