Aegis line vs horde armies

So im kinda new to 40k and i just read a battle report of typhus chaos vs nids. (which was very well done btw , check it out) one thing stuck out to me tho. The aegis line helped the horde of nids considerably more than chaos. Im thinking of getting one but was wondering how this could have been averted. Basically chaos deployed his entire force behind the line (except epi) Was this a mistake? Should he have diversified his bonds and scattered around the table? Im just curious cuz this was an example of things gone wrong concerning aegis. Thanks

Exactly. You don't bunch up against an enemy that is coming to kill you, unless you can out run them.

The aegis line is something to support your army, but everyone takes it because "durr 4+ cover save!" and pays no heed to the rest of the battle.

Re:Aegis line vs horde armies

Thanks. So the deployment was the deciding factor. Is there a way to know before deployment youre fighting against a horde army? Would you make the aegis as small as possible and put like 1 unit of oblits or havocs or hell typhus and his thriller entourage?

Aegis line vs horde armies

You'll also see that in the bat rep the armies started obscenely close to each other. It's rare to find that it's possible to assault for the player who goes second on turn one. To me it seemed like a tactical failure on the Chaos players part rather than that the ADL is poor.

I regularly run an ADL for my guard, whether I'm doing blob lascannon/plasmagun or mech (mech vets behind and ADL is just nasty). My opponent has never managed to get a cover-save against the chimeras due to being able to see over, and the guard blob can take FoMT.

Generally horde armies come in three kinds: 'Nids, Orks and Guard (although guard less so). With good ADL placement and deployment, they shouldn't get much use out of it. Just think ahead before you place it!
