HDF Capillary Towers and More (updated 17/12/12)

Howdy!

This is the collection of four Capillary Towers I started making on the weekend and finished last night. They are fairly quick and easy and got the idea from Blue Table Painting (I am not that creative). They are made using high density foam, a soldering iron and a sanding belt.

I buy the High Density Foam here in Australia from "Back 2 Basix" for around $16 AU a sheet. So far, a sheet has made me two lots of 12x6x40cm towers and fve lots of 4x6x19xm smaller towers.

It is very light, so I am basing on 3mm thick MDF and just cutting it out with a jigsaw. Although very light, it is also extremely strong and durable.

Work wise, fairly easy, just need the right tools. A Soldering Iron is a must, melts right into it and gives you those edges (I am making obelisks now and Eldar Runes).

The two larger ones stand around 35-41cm tall while the three smaller ones are around 15-18cm.

Enjoy!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Finished the "Hill", that represented a broken Capillary Tower of enormous size.

And started work on my Spore Chimney this morning while waiting for a Trygon's paint to dry.

HDF Capillary Towers and More (updated 17/12/12)

Oh, high density foam! I'm used to HDF being "high density fiberboard," MDF's somewhat stiffer and smoother textured cousin, with the foam boards being "extruded polystyrene insulation." I was wondering how you managed to piece together a convincing 'nid structure out of thin, flat sheets.

I like the builds, both for the 'nid bits and the obelisks, but I think more could be done with the painting. For the capillary towers/spore chimney, the muted tones sort of blend in with the table. Personally, at least, I think going slightly bolder with the colors would help the pieces stand out, both for the sake of visual interest and identifying them as foreign, biological features on the landscape. All of your bugs have brightly colored flesh and chitin, why not their bio-buildings, too?

In the same general vein, I feel like the obelisks don't scream "NECRON!" with their paint, just their shape. They've got the glyphs, they've got the pseudo-Egyptian form, but plain grey stone and muted gold accents feel a bit too... normal? When I think of Necrons, I think of glass-smooth obsidian and glowing glyphs - something that doesn't feel like humans could or would have made.

Well, that's my take, at least. Even with those criticisms, I rather like them, on the whole. Thanks for sharing.
