Paints who and where??

Hi Guys, I am getting a bit frustrated spending money on Citadel paints which I don't think are that great and have seen other brands that offer more paint and appear to have a overall better effect.

I especially like the look of VMA Gold (Vallejo Model Air) as it has such a realistic effect unlike the GW gold.

I'd really appreciate some ideas on what are the best to use prices and were I can get them, I'm based in UK so cheap UK suppliers would be awesome.

The only reason I have stuck with the GW paints is because I want continuity within my army.

Paints who and where??

Paint are largely a matter of personal preference, as their working properties may suit one painting style better than others, so it's hard to give any definitive answers. A quick search on Dakka would, however, yield tons of glowing reviews for Vallejo's various offerings, both in terms of overall quality and bang for your buck (or pound, in your case).

I'll leave the "where" up to your fellow countrymen, as I don't know UK suppliers, but I've found that prices are relatively consistent, stateside. Whether through full-fledged web stores or Ebay, it mostly comes down to shipping. Some Ebay sellers will try to gouge you with inflated shipping on top of apparently reasonable prices, but with combined shipping, I've found most of them to be comparable to well established web-stores (like The Warstore, over here), so long as you avoid ordering piecemeal. While I can't be sure, I imagine it's the same case in the UK.

Paints who and where??

If you use the old range of GW paints, the VGC range is probably a better match than the new GW range. I'm a fan of vallejo paints, use VMA, VGC, VMC and Vallejo liquid gold. I'd recommend you jump over, but be prepared for it to behave differently and take a bit to get used to. Might need to shake them more, or use additives like drying retarder or flow aid and thin with a different quantity of distilled water to what you do with your GW paints.

Here is a paint range conversion chart on dakka comparing old-gw to vallejo and some others.
