Questions about airbrush and compressor

Hey guys, just got into Warhammer and I'm loving it.

I want to buy an airbrush and compressor now to help me paint my armies faster.

Now I know I'm new, but I don't have enough time to paint all my pieces by hand, so I was looking around.

I did some research and found this compressor, Airbrush Depot TC-20T for around $110. Anyone have any experience with it?
http://www.amazon.com/Airbrush-TC-20T-AIRBRUSH-COMPRESSOR-REGULATOR/dp/B0038D38AA

Also looking for air brushes, found this linked from somewhere else on these forums.
Badger 105 Patriot
http://www.amazon.com/Badger-Air-Brush-Patriot-Gravity-Airbrush/dp/B002W84GTO/ref=sr_1_1?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1356234994&sr=1-1&keywords=badger+patriot+105

What do you guys think about the above two? I'm pretty sure I'm gonna get the tc-20t since its similar to the 3000R that people seem to be using, but I'm not sure about the air brush.

Thanks

Re:Questions about airbrush and compressor

I have the same compressor. It works but it is a bit tempermental. When it gets warm, it won't often turn back on to maintain the tank level. I need to let it cool a bit first. Granted, its cheap and it does have a two year warranty. From what I hear, they just replace the whole compressor rather than repairing it.

For the brush, .75mm needle/nozzle is huge. You won't have tons of trouble with clogging but you wont be painting any fine details either.

I have the Iwata HP CS with the .35 needle and its fine for vehicles and base coating infantry. I also recently bought a H&S evolution silverline with .2 needle. Its great for getting in close but its very picky about how thin the paint can be.

Questions about airbrush and compressor

First of all, both are fair selections.
Personally, I got my kit from e-bay for lass than half the regular price(iwata eclipse + ninja compressor).
Iwata Ninja compressor is particularly nice as it does not require maintenance, unlike other compressors.

I have to say that airbrush does not speed up army painting as much as it may seem. Keep in mind that responsible maintenance of the brush will require you to go through small ritual between changing colours. As well as other cleaning procedures.
It does speed up work on vehicles and such, but small infantry, not as much.
I decided to get my kit largely because I have a mechanised Death Korps army - lots of tanks and fancy resin. Make sure that you know what you are committing to, airbrush is a tool and is not magical one, at that.

Fast armies can be achieved by dipping and other numerous techniques for fraction of the price.

Questions about airbrush and compressor

Really?
Hmm, well the way I paint is I just paint all my guys on the same step like an assembly line, so I wouldn't be changing paints often.

Also I'd really only airbrush for the base coats, which is what takes up most of my time when brushing.

My main thing when looking at compressors is that it needs to be quiet, which is why I thought the one I found seems good.

Any other air brushes I should look at?

Re:Questions about airbrush and compressor

Can't comment on that airbrush or compressor, but while you're purchasing make sure you get yourself an airbrush cleaner something like this:

I ordered mine from Hong Kong via ebay for $18 delivered iirc since Aussie retailers charge an arm and a leg. I mention this now so you can get it sorted before you have your airbrush - you *really* want one of these to 1. keep your airbrush nice and clean and 2. speed up colour changes. Oh and 3. the filter reducing the paint floating around is nice too. If you don't have it sorted before hand, you might try your airbrush and let paint dry (even a little bit) in it in your excitement to play with your new toy - you don't want to do that.

Questions about airbrush and compressor

If you need only the base coat, why not get coloured primers?
Such as this:
http://usshop.thearmypainter.com/products.php?ProductGroupId=2

15$ should last you long enough for a whole army.
While you are there, you can pick up a jar of quickshade to get shading done for the whole army in fraction of the time.

I've not used dipping/quickshade myself, but if I ever man up to paint my 500+ strong Skaven army, I'd most definitely go this route.

Re:Questions about airbrush and compressor

While a single colored primer/base coat combination may work for some applications, in other applications the wanted color can only be achieved with separate primer and base coats. This is especially true, when the base coat is going to be a more unusual color, like when I finally get around to paint my Necrons, with a Midnight Blue base coat.

Theres several sources out there for spray paints that come in just about any color you'd need for base coating stuff . Even for base coating airbrushes have a rather steep learning curve and a high start up cost. For most I really just suggest avoiding them, buy some spray paint and more minis with the funds

Questions about airbrush and compressor

Base coat was the wrong term to use, sorry. I mean the larger areas on the model that are of the same color. It would seem faster to just air brush those areas. Like vehicles or marine power armor. Am I wrong in thinking about that?

I actually don't even have my own army. My friend got me into war hammer and I've been helping him paint, and I'm about to buy my own stuff so I was thinking ahead here.
I just realized in the op I said my pieces lol.

Speaking of which....time to decide what to start with...

Questions about airbrush and compressor

Vehicles - yes. Marines - no so much.
Basecoat, ideally, means you choose a colour that your army primarily uses (say, blue for Ultramarines) and spray the entirety of the army with it. Then you begin adding other, more minor, colours on top of it.
Coloured primer allows you to do that cheaply.

Issue is that many people buy airbrush and quickly come to regret the decision as it is an expensive tool that not that easy to use well. Not to mention, you'll need airbrush medium, acrylic cleaning solution, filters, etc...
That's why I insist on being cautious.

I would strongly discourage beginners from buying an airbrush.

Re:Questions about airbrush and compressor

I don't know why you think that you have to use expensive airbrush paints - people are using thinned paint and often the thinner is little more than a bit of windex or rubbing alcohol depending on the paint type.

Basically, it comes down to two things - How much painting you are going to do, and how much practice ( with practicing you just use inexpensive paint and newspaper, to learn basic control. ) your willing to put in on the airbrush before you actually put paint on a model.

A third and lesser consideration, is the availability of the paint color you want to use, if the color is openly available in spray can form and you don't have that many models, then there is no doubt that it would be more advantageous to not buy an airbrush, but if the opposite is true, then it may be better to buy a airbrush. Keep in mind that if you decide to purchase an airbrush, buying a cheep airbrush that hardly works, will in the long run be more expensive ( in terms of effectiveness and frustration ) than buying an airbrush of better quality ( it still doesn't have to be high quality ).

Questions about airbrush and compressor

Alright well, you can teach yourself several techniques to use even the HP-CS to paint marines which has a 1 inch to 1/2 inch spray pattern. Mono toned armies are good for this, basically space marines and Tau. You will need a fine point airbrush in order to get down to detail level but you can do a color shading gradient very fast with large patten brushes. Such as the army is illuminated from a high angle by a sun or adding stark shadows extremely quickly. You will probably never leave behind brushes unless you find some ungodly surgical airbrush for equally ungodly price.

Side note I will stab anyone that even attempts to take my Iwata equipment away from me.

If you want to get serious about it later on Iwata-medea is one of your best options as Iwata is acrylic friendly and many award winning painters use iwata. Well I want to know what is the lowest PSI you can use your guns on it. I know with the ninja it can go down to 10 PSI and mine goes down all the way to 1 PSI, the reason why I bring this is up is the utility it provides in spray patterns. With the correct angels and low airflow the paint basicaly blobs out of the gun and leaves a nice splatter pattern for mud. Just food for thought.
