In melee combat a spartan does far more damage bashing than the weapon does at range, therefore the guns are all strength 3 apart from the shotgun as it is very powerful at short range, and the heavy weapons, both of which are the mounted versions from halo 3 as the rocket launcher that is more mobile would run out of ammo to quickly in a game of 40k. In the rules for the DMR the reason it is single shot is because you cannot assault after firing it. the rest is pretty self explanitory, but obviously these rules will need playtested before they can be finalised.

Halo Spartan Rules

I think you are getting to tied up in fluff. You want to preserve the feel of a Spartan, while allowing for something unique in an IG list.

So the rocket launcher should be S8, AP3 like a normal rocket launcher, but a spartian can use it as an assault 1 weapon at reduced range.

In fact, most Spartan weapons would be assault, since you rarely stay put in game. Your stats are markedly inferior to a lasgun in most cases. That really doesn't hold the feel of the halo weapons in game.

I would suggest the following:

Battle rifle R24, Assault 2, S3, AP 6
DMR R24, Assault 1, S3 AP6 Sniper
Assault Rifle R12, Assault 4 s3 ap6
shotgun R12 assault 1 S4 AP4 concussion

Also, the halo marine armor has an energy field that can take a significant amount of punishment, backed up by armor that is resistant to small arms. It also enhances physical strength.

A spartan can lift a jeep, punch out a 8 foot tall warrior alien, carry a full sized minigun, survive a fall from several miles up and a direct hit from alien anti tank weapons (albeit knocking the spartan out).

This is directly comparable to the Space Marines of 40 k. If anything the Mjolinir suit is faster and would have a better invuln save if lower overall armor.

I would guess an 4+/5++

Halo Spartan Rules

read the notes, in game you are slower while holding the rocket launcher or flamer, guard armour can protect against 50cal machine guns so it is about the same as marine armour (heavy stubber). as for the spartans, that is why they are S4, only cheif has ever taken that mucg punishment, i am talking like halo wars spartans. also sniper weapons are automatically S3 so there is no need to say it, plus i want to keep it with 40k fluff, the combat in 40k is alot more fast paced and brutal in 40k, so 4 shots on an assault rifle, no. it is a rapid fire weapon therefore it uses the rapid fire rules. in 40k when you have a horde of 20 orks charging at you, big guns are too big, you need a pistol or dedicated combat weapon like a shotgun for it to work, it is one thing fighting scattered enemies, but when it's a scrum of 20-30 enemies in a very tight space you reallt cant use an assault rifle. i may however put in a special rule saying they may assault after firing rapid fire weapons but if they do so they do not gain a bonus attack for a pistol and CCW. terminato armour provides better protection than spartan armour, plus i am being generous with it as space marines in power armour have sheilding but they have NO invun.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
plus the assault 2 on the shotgun is to simulate multiple enemies getting hit, not firing 2 shots. just like in codex marines and codex imperial guard. in both of those codexes they have no AP value so AP4 is insane. there is no way a shotgun has the same armour peircing value as a heavy bolter...

Halo Spartan Rules

^As a fan of both "worlds", I like those rules.

I think writing them for balance, like done above, and not trying to push every bit of fluff into it is much better. At least with those rules you will have better luck with people playing with that unit over what has been done before. 100 points seems a bit low to me, and it would be a kind of thing where I would take in almost all of my lists (20 ppm? Sure why not), but then again I have a tenancy to over-cost pretty much everything I write (I don't know why I do it, I guess I subconsciously do it thinking that I would much rather have things overcosted and playable than undercosted and OP)

The only thing I have to ask though, is on wounds. I believe one wound is all that's needed, but there are cases where Spartan II's in the stories have survived ruptured organs and severe bleeding internal and external. And there are also many cases where they fall to a simple bullet wound. But hey, plot armor hahaha

Yeah, it's similar with space marines, look at the cover for battle for the abyss. one of the marines has had his chest ruptured by a bolt shell and is still alive...with a hole in his chest... he is only just alive and is close to death but FFS! the guy just shelled a mini rocket and wasn't blown off his feet and instantly killed!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
as for points, you may be right about an increase. i'll do some play tests with them and judge it from there.

These seem very much like Spartan IIIs which makes sense in terms of profile and I like. I agree that the weapon profile doesnt really match. DMR should be assault 1. And certainly not sniper as that nullifies the strength of the weapon.

Halo Spartan Rules

ya

also i feel spartans should get some sort of go to ground equivalent of an invulnerable save because countless times in the storylines they are saved by locking their armour so maybe 5++ and go to ground equivalent penalties?
also you could make a wargear option for them to take a bubble shield(s) for 15 points each i think would be balanced that grant 4++ against one units shooting attack so they would have to buy more (0-1 or maybe 0-2 per spartan). so if they were to get shot at they would drop a shield and get invuls against that battle cannon then lose the shield but if they have more then one problem solved

Are there differences between IIIs and IIs? Sure. Can they be well represented in stats? No. Lets say you drag Spartan IIIs down a notch, then they become baseline humans in some areas. I doubt a Spartan III is as weak as a normal human or can die as easily as a normal human, likewise if you boost Spartan IIs, you end up with stats in the Ogryn range, you know, those 3 wound guys the size of a Sedan who can drag a chimera across a battlefield and can have bullets bounce off their skulls.

Best way to represent the differences between Spartan IIs and IIIs would be through special rules, since any stat differences quickly become too noticeable.

Automatically Appended Next Post:

kinratha wrote:
This is the first time someone posted a good stat line for Spartans.

Also this, isn't some gakky Str 4 vets in carapace armour, and not some str 5 guys with artificer armour and a 4+ invul save.
