I'm aware that the hydraulics wouldn't work (they aren't connected to anything), I don't think I could get the connections to look convincing. I'm betting on most people not worrying about it.
If anyone has any suggestions for additional details or things I've missed. More cables are likely.

As a bit of a bonus (if you want to call it that), a sneak-peek at the next one (still very W.i.P.)

I think you're right, on that count. As long as they have a vaguely plausible function (e.g. "arm hydraulics") and an identifiable form (rod/tube in tube, with capped and hinged ends), they get the point across. If you can guess at what it does, you're usually fine, even if you can't tell how it would do it. It's the same with a lot of stock models - armor you couldn't possibly move in, even if every plate articulated perfectly, tubes going nowhere, etc. The Rule of Cool works in your favor, as well.
