Painting Black/Dark Brown fur on a wolf?

Thunderwolves to be specific, 3 plastic and 1 finecast.

Looking at real pictures of black wolves, they often have a lot of grey around the face and dark brown areas down their backs/sides.

I can handle that, but I'm stuck on how to do the black. How do I do it in a way that it has depth and doesn't just look "black"?

Thanks for any suggestions.

The best way to do it is to use pure black as your darkest shadow. Then, you want to step up to vallejo "charcoal" color. I cant recall if it is extraopaque or not, but its called charcoal. Anyway, this is a black that isnt quite so black. Its got a slight blueing in it. Then, i would step up highlighting into a mix of the charcoal and codex grey then codex grey then fortress grey. That should provide a good result.
