You still have city and parish sales taxes. The average sales tax is still around 8.5% for the state right now. This would push it to 12.5%. Have fun with that, Governor.

I live in Texas and there is NO state income tax. However, property taxes are high here. I would expect the LA plan to include higher property taxes to get around the 12.5% sales tax.

The gas business is booming in Louisiana, but like the oil boom of the mid 1900s, it can and likely will go bust at some point for the state.

I'd rather that LA adopt a property tax similar to TX and also get their cut of the shale natural gas...

Sales tax is regressive in nature, for sure. That's why you can't have just sales tax, it needs to be in combination with an income tax to ensure a progressive, rather than a regressive tax burden.

Property taxes are a good system, but one with their own set of flaws (the big one being they're taxing wealth, not income, which means a person who inherits a family home may not generate the money to pay the tax on it, for instance, or a person might retire and no longer be able to stay in their home). As such, they're probably best off being kept low, used just as a means to generate money to deliver basic services like fire, roads and rubbish collection.

Really, the best system is one that uses all three taxes in conjunction. Unfortunately the politics of federal/state/local revenue collection and distribution kind of feths that up.

No disagreement, here. Having the people to run the numbers and perform audits is probably a huge drain on the eventual income it brings in, relatively speaking.

Yeah, and while it's important for the above reasons to have an income tax, once you've already got one at the Federal level, doubling up and doing it all over again at the state level seems a fairly big waste of money.

Kilkrazy wrote:
The plus point about sales tax is that it is also levied on visitors.

Does Louisiana have a strong tourism industry?

Very. Tourism is very important to Louisiana. The River boats bring a lot of people in from Texas, Arkansas, and Mississippi. The smarter cities have given restaurants and retail outlets incentives to come in to make themselves more "weekend destinations" than just a place to go gamble. Nearly every city of reasonable size has Mardi Gras parades. It's not just New Orleans, but none of the other cities can touch what NO does for Mardi Gras. Weeks of parades, really.

New Orleans: Mardi Gras and New Years is a big draw to New Orleans. Bourbon Street draws people year-round though. There's also lots of shopping and restaurants in the French Quarter and it's a great atmosphere, depending on whether you're looking for something for the family, a get-a-way with the wife, or just want to get laid. Lots of historical buildings, ghost walks, voodoo lounges, and other new age tourist traps. There's also the New Orleans Saints, whatever the basketball team is called now, and river boats; however, the river boats in New Orleans don't do as well as they do elsewhere. People don't really go there to gamble, it seems.

Shreveport: River boats is the big draw. Also shopping, as you'd have to drive to Dallas to find the nearest city with this variety of gak to buy and do. Tons of restaurants. A few very nice hotels. Downtown Bossier (across the Red River from Shreveport) is very nice, now.

Baton Rouge: People come from all over to watch LSU play. The State Capital is an interesting visit. You can see where Governor Long was shot. Again with the restaurants, shopping and such.
