Monstrous creatures

So me and my buddy were looking over the Monstrous creature rules. And we noticed their CC rules. And we had a hard time deciding if monstrous creatures were all ways AP 2 in CC or only when they smash. Because for Nids they have a weapon (Bone sword) that allows them to become AP 2 in CC, but obviously this came out before the 6th edition rules came out. So if this is true I figured people just used the Bone sword/whip, just for the whip.

I am not sure I fully understand what you were saying, but I think what you are saying is Smash = AP 2, Normal attacks are AP 3?

Just having Smash as a rule you are AP2 all the time in CC. In addition it can be "activated" to x2 str and half attacks.

Re:Monstrous creatures

Read the Smash rule carefully.

It says a model with this rule's melee attacks are always AP2, unless a weapon would make them AP1, and that the model has the option to half their base attack characteristic to double their Strength.

Its quite clear that its always AP2, regardless of if the model decides to 'Smash' or not.

I'm not quite sure what captain-crud means by the second half of his post either, but Smash does make all attacks AP2. The rule itself states that all close combat attacks gain AP2 (unless a weapon would give them AP1) and in addition the model may elect to make a Smash Attack which has other effects.

In regards to the Bonesword, it actually doesn't confer AP2 but simply ignores armor. And yes, on the Tyrant it is generally kept purely for the Lash Whip half of the weapon combo, though on the infantry units that can take them (Tyrant Guard, Warriors/Shrikes) the ignore armor effect is valuable.

Edit: Drat. Beat me to it...
