40K Sons of Medusa Project

I decided to build another space marine army but wanted to do something a little different with them. The last one I did was Ultramarines, so pretty vanilla. After looking through the other less common chapters and rereading some fluff I settled on the Sons of Medusa. This is going to be a long term project where I paint up various parts of the army inbetween my work on other projects. But, I'm hoping if I share it here, this will help keep me motivated and moving this project forward.

To begin I pulled out a tactical squad and assembled a couple marines to use as tests for the rest of the project. I wanted to nail down the paints I'll be using for the color scheme and explore some different weathering techniques. I want these guys to look as if they've seen a lot of action and have gotten pretty beat up along the way. Here's my work on the first two:

Just working on the basic color scheme. I'm using blues to shade the greens and to highlight the black, just to make it a little more interesting. I'm going for a slightly duller green and an off white instead of the more traditional bright emerald and white scheme.

And now we've added battle damage and a friend...

I'm pretty happy with how they've turned out, though I will continue to refine the process as I work on the rest of the squad. I'm doing all of the design work on the marines myself. It gives me a good opportunity to practice my freehand. Oh, and I will add some lettering to the purity seals. These guys are just mostly finished, not 100% though.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
So, with the first two figures mostly finished I started doing my prep work on some more of the squad. I'm still at the early stages on these three, but you've gotta start somewhere. I'll add the heads next and may do some small conversions to the arms of at least one of them. I did begin work on the sergeants head but was pretty unsatisfied with the results. I'm currently stripping it and will start over.

In addition to the infantry, I've got some more powerful support in the works.

I've converted the leg and added a pole for a banner, but I have a lot more planned for this one. Most of what you see is just dry fitting parts. It's unlikely I'll get any paint on him until I finish of the tactical squad. But that should give me plenty of time to work on the conversions.

Thanks for taking a look. Hopefully there will be a lot more to come.

how is this level of painting even reachable?! wonder-freaking-fully painted my sir!

subbed.

I am painting a Deathwatch company myself, and as you may know, the Deathwatch draws its marines from different other chapters, and to recreate this effect, I am asking all Dakkanaut to submit his marine chapter design, you if you'd like to, I can include a marine with your color scheme(or as close as I can get to it ) in my army. on my blog there's some more information about how to join my Deathwatch legion.

http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/494691.page

Good luck, and happy gaming!

Humey.

Really nice job on the painting my friend. The armour is really smoothe and has some nice blending to it. Good attention to details, love the weathering you pulled off, gives the model a more "real" feeling.

And did you freehand the "3" number on the knee pad? Very nice indeed.

The dreadnought looks cool, looking forward to see him build up and painted. Never bin to fan of a banner sticking up from the back of marines. Dosent look that bad on a Dreadnought, but i still dont kinda like it, only my opinon tho

Anyway man, awesome work, il be keeping track on this blog!

Re:40K Sons of Medusa Project

Thanks everyone, I'm glad you all like.

Young_Logan - For the cracks I mixed together a reddish brown (actual mix isn't critical) and then just painted random crack patterns. I tried to keep them jagged and work from edges or other features in the armor... but just do whatever looks right to you. I then took black and outlined the upper edges of all the cracks in order to create a fake shadow. On the bottom edges I took the highlight color for the surrounding paint (white, green+white, or grey) and create a fake highlight. Since these cracks are so small, those three colors are all you need for a nice 3-D effect. When I do this same effect on the dread or other vehicles I might have to add more detail and color/shading for it to look right.

Charky - Yeah, the 3 and the shoulder pads are all free hand. I hear you on the banners, they can be a little silly. But I was inspired by some of the forgeworld dreads with banners so I thought I'd give it a try. Hopefully I can come up with a cool design to make it worth while.
