Is the hobby starter set a good set of paints?

It's allright for a beginners set of paints. But you will get substantial more bang for your buck, if you buy the tools at the hardware store (cheaper and better quality) and the paints from another brand. I'm a huge fan of Vallejo, so I would recommend the Game Color Range, as these colors are almost identical with the old GW range. They are cheaper, you get more paint per pot and they come in dropper bottles, which are way better than the pots GW uses.

Cheers.

Re:Is the hobby starter set a good set of paints?

You're looking at this set, then. It's decent if you are going to buy everything from GW and don't have any tools already and need the colors it provides. As was said, all the tools can be bought cheaper and in greater supply elsewhere. The 9 paints are about $33 worth, it depends if they will suit the paint job you have in mind; with the new base, layer, shade system you'd be better off buying paints that will suit your scheme to get the best results if you are sticking with GW. You can accomplish the same from different brands for a bit cheaper, too. It all depends on what you have available and how far you are willing to go for it.

A bit of shopping will get you better results for the $58 you are going to spend on the starter.

For the rock you want your HQs on, I'd go for cork tiles, that's my go-to for simple rocks.

Citadel Hobby Starter Set
1 pot of Leadbelcher (12ml)
1 pot of Macragge Blue (12ml)
1 pot of Waaagh! Flesh (12ml)
1 pot of Averland Sunset (12ml)
1 pot of Bugman's Glow (12ml)
1 pot of Mephiston Red (12ml)
1 pot of Mournfang Brown (12ml)
1 pot of Imperial Primer (12ml)
1 pot of White Scar (12ml)

1 Starter Brush
1 pair of Plastic Cutters
1 bottle of PVA Glue (20ml)
1 bottle of Plastic Glue (20ml)
1 Tub of Static Grass (10 grams)
1 Tub of Sand (45 grams)

Re:Is the hobby starter set a good set of paints?

There's nothing "wrong" with them, you got a good, basic selection of paint, the brush will work fine to start with, some people are not fond of GW's sprue cutters but they work fine for me, the glue is glue and the sand is sand (you just paid premium prices for them, they and the flock can be had much cheaper elsewhere.). So nothing you got is bad, it just is what it is and it should all work fine for you starting out.

Washes are not just watered down paint, they have an additive to help break the surface tension to encourage them to flow into recesses to help share the model. There's a topic in the tutorial section on how to make your own.

Happy painting.

Is the hobby starter set a good set of paints?

It's ok I suppose. But if you want to save money and have absolutely no idea what colour paints you need, then I recommend getting the paints of primary colours. Red, yellow, blue, white and black so that you can mix them as you see fit.

Also, I really don't like GW paints. They tend to dry up in the bottle and you're much better off getting paints from another manufacturer like Vallejo or Reaper. They're generally cheaper per mL and you get more paint as well.

In regards to washes, they help create nice shadows quite easily.
