Question about new apint range

I've done some searching, and didn't even get close to the info I need, so...

...I am looking for the closest equivalent to these "old" GW colors: Shining Gold, Midnight Black, Badmoon Yellow.

After a $10 FAIL at the local store, I'm leery of asking the guy behind the counter anymore. The gold he sold me was NOT shining gold, it was too orange, and unlike Shining Gold, which was opaque (much like the old mithril silver --- you could paint that over anything!), this one was thin and translucent. The Cantor Blue, was most definitely NOT Midnight Blue, too light, and too grey.

Any help would be appreciated, and might get me to painting regularly again.

Also, did ALL of the retailers send back their old GW paint? Is there no one trying to unload old paint pots?

H.

Question about new apint range

The chances are - no. Most would have snapped up their favourite colours as quickly as possible!

In the articles section, I think that there's a paint conversion chart into other ranges. It may help you.

Question about new apint range

With GW changing their paints, a lot of the old ones don't have an exact matchup anymore.

For example, Mechrite Red's new equivelant is Mephiston Red. However Mephiston Red is much brighter than Mechrite.

As for thinness, the new paints are much more thinned down compared to the old range. GW says it's to help new painters by letting them go right out of the pot. I say it's to sell less paint for more money.

And I believe all retailers were required to send back the old paints, though not 100% sure. My FLGS had sent their back, while one in a city 3 hours away still had some when the line came out. YMMV

God I can't spell today.

Question about new apint range

Jirin wrote:

As for thinness, the new paints are much more thinned down compared to the old range. .

I guess that explains my issues with the new white I bought as well. Some of the old paints had "clear" bases, and others were white or opaque bases. Shining gold was good because it would cover anything, and took washed and inks well. This new gold reminds be or the "old" gold I hated. It wouldn't cover anything, even after multiple coats, and its color was just "off", no quite right for anything I painted regularly, and not a good highlight.

I will look for the conversion chart, and see what develops.

I guess I should probably prepare to be disappointed.

H.

Question about new apint range

The new paints aren't the same colour as the old ones. Your best bet would be to look at some old pots and compare those colours to the ones online or at your FLGS. I have a few of the old pots and the old snakebite leather is more akin to the new tallarn sand than the new balor brown. The conversion chart is okay if you want some highlights/shade for your old paints, since they're either lighter or darker than their predecessors. It's best to pick the colours yourself than to ask for them.

Question about new apint range

Your best bet is to go for Vallejo Game Colour if you want a good colour match. The opacity may be different, however.

If you want a gold which covers well, however, try the new Gold Base colour (sort of a foundation), Balthasar Gold. I've heard good things about the Base's coverage.

Question about new apint range

I'll try the gold. I liked the old Shining Gold because it was not too gold and made a nice accent color.

In a fit of despair I tried putting a little hot water in my old Midnight blue, and popped it in the microwave. Low and behold, I've got liquid again! Not enough to paint much, but it mixes well enough with the new blue to get me close.

We'll see how things work out.

H.
