White primers are only in either spracycan or airbrush form, to my knowledge. I have used Tamiya Primers quite extensively, though. All you really need is a brief spritz, and it gives really good teeth for paint. They are spray can based, though, and are expensive.

Brush-on primers may be had from a variety of manufacturers, from Humbrol, to Vallejo. I've only ever used Vallejo, and you can either brush it on (messy as can be!), or blast it through an airbrush.

Unfortunately, the Vallejo stuff is inconsistent in its manufacture. Some batches are great, provide tremendous bite, and are just fantastic to work with. I've had other batches where the bite simply isn't there, and paint sloughs off.
