A couple of years ago I had a boyfriend that I introduced to WH40k. I bought him a bunch of orks, since they are quite easy both to play and paint decently. Here are my suggestions based on what he thought was fun:

What you need to get next for your starting army is a lot of regular orc boys with shootas (the "rifle" they hold in two hands) or sluggas (the pistol they use together with axes, this is the models you already have a few of). About 60 ordinary boys is good to start with.

Then you can build an army like this:

War boss (about 100p, depending on what gear he has)

20 ork boys with a nob (~150p)
20 ork boys with a nob (~150p)
20 ork boys with a nob (~150p)
20 gretchin with 2 runtherds (80p)
10 gretchin with 1 runtherd (40p)

This is about the first half of a 1500p army. Start there and play some friendly games to get to know how it works and feels. Just rush across the table and charge everything you can. Use the grot units to hold objectives, they don't really fight that good :-)

Next, buy some Lootas. They shoot a lot and should aim for anything that you don't want to fight in close combat.

After that you rebuild your mek to have a Kustom Force Field. (or buy that model if modding is scary) It's very good to keep your boys alive!

Then you buy a couple of trukks and start learning how the rules for vehicles and transporting orks work. You are probably going to want to buy some more orks to put into the trucks.

Then you buy a flying machine or two, and learn how to use that. They are fun!

At that point you should be at roughly 1500 points and have a working army!

Some tips: Trust the regular ork. It is very cheap and very effective. Don't buy too many fancy upgrades on vehicles or characters.
