Tyranid Paint Scheme help, please.

Hi All

I've nearly finished my marines and with that project comings to an end I find my thoughts turning to the next project on my bench, my tyranids.

Now I was originally thinking about doing a kraken scheme but have decided against it as none of my other armies are a gw scheme it made sense to continue to avoid them. So to be a little different I thought about reversing the kraken scheme. By reversing them I thought you'd get a dessert look (which I want in hindsight as my board is a dessert one) so I mentally ran with it and came up with the following.

Prime white

Chitin

Bane blade/khemri Brown
Zames dessert/bubonic Brown
Sepia wash
Tallarn sand/dessert yellow
Ushbati/bleached bone

Flesh

Doombull/dark flesh
Wash (not sure black, sepia or flesh)

Soft tissue

Ratskin/dwarf flesh
Flesh wash

What do people think, I know it's hard with no pics but do folks think it will work

Thanks
Spanky

You have an awful lot of brown-based colors there. Hard to picture without pics. Any chance of throwing together a quick test figure.

Also, think about your process and how many steps you will need to paint. Depending on your list, you could be painting hundreds of figures and that small extra step on the test figure magnifies into something horrifying when you're staring at 50 termagants.

My color scheme is one of a kind. (Cough, cough, I saw a model on eBay a few years ago and decided to paint my entire army off of this Trygon I saw) No one else has it (*shifty eyes*) that I know of. I'll post some pictures up in a bit but I use "Cadian Fleshtone" with 2 layers of ink: Reikland Fleshshade and Nuln Oil. This gives a really dark brown and fills in the gaps for easily mass produced modelling.

This is the easiest way off getting a lot of effective table-top quality models down fast. After you have the skin/flesh painted, you simply add your carapace colors and celebrate. On a day I'm in the mood, I'll get roughly 24 gants down or 1 Tervigon (or any other MC). The ink drying phase takes the longest. And I do it twice so there is a lot of downtime.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
http://s1071.beta.photobucket.com/user/defenestrate8/library/Tyranids

Lava-based Wastelands.

I think that dessert or is it desert (which of these id sugary food and which is a big sandy place)? Anyway I think that theme is good. You are using a quite a few browns and I suggest that you make one clearly darker than the other. Your carapace darker than the skin or vice versa. This will help to make them look more defined.

First thanks to all who commented,

You've raised points that I was worried about, especially the possible over complicated/time element.

I'll try a tester and let you know.

It will not only give you a good idea of what your figure will look like, but also how much work is required to do it, which is a huge consideration with Tyranids.

I'm not too concerned about having to put work in, i'm the slowest painter I know and have over 3000 points on foot Guard, but I know what you mean there are parts of my IG scheme I wish I hadn't bothered with.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Ok, so here's a quick tester I did, apologies i'm not the greatest painter or photographer and this was a rush (start to finish 1.5 hours including drying)

I used a black wash on the Dark Flesh in the end and Tallarn flesh rather than dwarf (as I didn't have dwarf). When I was doing it a couple of things jumped out.

One, not sure if priming white was a great idea, was too easy to notice bits I missed.

Two, the dessert yellow didn't add much after I used water down bubonic on khemri. I was wondering if using a darker/mid tone brown would be better like calthan, as it would make the bleaced bone edging pop more.
