Beginner Painting: Warhammer 40,000: Dark Vengeance

Hello, I'm Sam.

Contrary to my user name I am no king. I am in fact a bellow average player and painter of 40k. I painted and played a little bit as a child but I was really just dipping perfectly good models into paint pots. This really produced some horrifying looking troops and I learnt from my mistakes. To late however as I already had a multicoloured disfigured army of what appeared to be power rangers. Pictures may come... later...

So anyway... I have bought the dark vengeance box set to try and get back into playing. I think I will play as dark angels as they have that shiny new codex and all the jazz that comes with it. I know chaos have one as well but... I'm the good guys! Until a friend turns up with a 1000 point army... then suddenly my dark angles fall to the temptations of evil and get a little help from their crazy minded chaos cousins...

My aim is to paint this box up improving my painting skills as I go... these models are starting out rough as I'm really not to good, yet.
My hope is that posting here will motivate me to paint with a bit more of a pace than a model a month, as well as the possibility of some pro tips from the experts.

So this is my first post.

My starting point in pictures:

This is the two armies in their box being all cool n stuff.... I think paining small to big and good to bad is how I will work through it. I have the special edition guy missing... damn it! But I can just about live without it. The two guys I have so far painter are the two that are hopefully in the image bellow.

These guys where my first painted models in ages. I don't think they are that bad over all. With a little more technique, practice and time I think I could have a pretty good looking army going. Even if some might think this is a boring path to take... I think I will enjoy it.

If you have any comments that are nice or helpful please comment/reply. I need the help.

Thanks for looking at my post and I hope to have a new post soon of my next model I paint. Might be another average joe space marine but then you get to judge if there is any improvement and tell me what sucks and what has gone right.

Peace!

They are looking nice. One comments

1. First comment is directed towards the red on the guns. Reds have a hard time covering other colors, so doing an initial coat with one of the Base colors will give you complete coverage on top of which you can paint your red. Then it won't look streaky.

2. Find yourself a nice #2 flat brush. They are exceptionally good for painting things like raised insignia (chapter symbols on the shoulder pads) because you can drag the flat part of the brush along the edge of the symbol and get really crisp results.

Nice work though, keep it up.

Don't forget the bases either. A little bit of sand, wash, and small clumps of static grass makes for a cheap but effective base.

I encourage you to post pics regularly. The community here is very good about providing constructive feedback.
