Needing feedback on painting

The SM and crons look very good (though need basing! ).

The IG are quite messy... rather than drybrushing grey over black, try priming the models with grey, then washing with black. Also add in a few little bits of colour - painting the mask lenses white then using an ink (which has a built in gloss) will add in some colour and detail. SImilarly, cables, rank/unity badges etc are a great place to add colour.

Your flamers tanks could also be a cool place to add in some warning colours, or warning stripes.

The Hellbrute is pretty good, though the black is very flat. Black is a difficult colour to paint really well. Try using a dark grey then washing black a couple of times and I think you will get a much deeper black with some highlighting and shading built in.

In summary then - IG need neatening up and some extra colour, Hellbrute just needs to have some attention paid to the black but is otherwise pretty good, SM are pretty nice - you might want to use a wash just to give some shading to the armour but they are reasonable as is, the crons are good - maybe paint the eyes a brighter colour (white + coloured ink = excellent) and maybe hit them with either a weak black/dark brown/blue wash, depending on the hue you want to go with (though the blue stripes and detailing on them might go well with the black or dark brown wash rather than the blue wash).

Re:Needing feedback on painting

Well I have never based anything before, but have been looking into it. but really wanna get better at painting before hopping onto something else.

And I was planning on applying a dark wash to the termies and crons, but trying to get it right on test parts, as i don't want shine on certain parts.
Would watering down washes help with that, or would that be silly? :v

And will try your idea for the IG with the newer squad I am painting, If I like it more will repaint it all
Also for colours to contrast I'm thinking stark reds.greens and maybe yellow (as yellow paint is evil incarnate)

Thanks for the feedback

Needing feedback on painting

I've not used any of the new GW washes - the old ones didn't give a shine though I have heard some of the new ones do. Ask in store, or here on the forums and I am sure someone will be able to tell you which ones leave a gloss finish.

Watering washes gives a much weaker shading effect which can be very useful. Painting things white then using a weak wash of black, brown or blue helps with shadowing the white with little effort and also can help to give it an interesting hue.

Again, I have not used any of the new GW washes and I don't water down my inks (which dry with a gloss finish) as I want a nice solid colour whenever I have used them, however, I would imagine if your washes dry shiny then they will dry shiny if you water them down, though as with the colour this will be less intense.

For contrasting/warning colours you can never go wrong with yellow and orange, though they can be a pita to paint sometimes.

I think your IG would look good with either blue, red or green goggles and maybe some small orange unit markings (even edging your current unit markings with an orange line) would really just break up the grey.

Basing is really easy - for minimal effort you can get something looking pretty cool.

The base for this guy was done using "fine" basing material from Gale Force 9 for the main ground cover, a few blobs of PVA to hold tufts of GF9 static grass and some GF9 large basing material to make the little rocks. Other details include the ribcage and the little musroom made from greenstuff:

Spoiler:

Basic troops have the same kind of basing, though more generic with fine basing material and static grass and the odd larger bit of basing material:

Spoiler:

The rims were then all painted brown to match the table.

Each base takes about 5-10 minutes to do in total (without drying time) and you can easily use sand and stones instead of "actual" basing materials.

Re:Needing feedback on painting

If you are, as you said, 'taking these to a game', they look fine. I would definitely base them, even if all you use is some GW textured paint and some static grass. That will definitely improve their look on the tabletop.

I don't disagree with anything that anyone has said, but a lot of the comments are geared towards looking at these large close-ups of these models. With some minimal basing, these models will look fine on the table for a game as is. There's a lot of other stuff and details you could be doing/adding, but if your goal is to get a completed army (or two,or three, or four, based on your model range) on the table for playing, this is already a good quality. If those three guardsmen are plonked down in a platoon of 22 guys painted to a comparable quality, they will totally look fine for a game. If anyone laughs at them during a game, I think you are playing TFG.

Of course, these models are fine for gaming! From 2-3ft they would look pretty much the same as any other painted model, and pretty much any paint job is better than primed or unpainted (and these, especially the crons and SM) are far better than some painted models I have seen played

I should have made that clearer - I went straight into painting mode!

Highlight those guys and hit 'em with some washes (GW shades). If they shine then it's because you haven't shaken the pot or it's a bad one. If it does shine, just seal hit the model with a matt varnish, but you should do that after it's done. They definitely need basing, and it's not even something completely new. Just imagine what world your guys are on, and put either sand, dirt, grass, snow, etc. onto them as a quick and easy way of basing.
