You need to at LEAST red First and Only. You can skip the 2nd novel, it's kinda bleh and doesn't really develop the characters.

After that you can pick and choose, but if you don't read them all the way through there will be points where you say "Wait, what? When did that guy die? When did this guy join the Ghosts?"

I read First and Only, then not having read any BL books since it was published picked up the 3rd Omnibus, Traitor General was a weirdly perfect book to get back into the series with, but there was a lot of stuff that got spoiled for books 2-6 that I wish I hadn't known about in advance.

If there was any one book from the series I'd recommend reading before reading the last book, I'd say Blood Pact. It isn't that long, but at least half of the story elements in Salvation's Reach are created in that book. So if you read it first you'll be good to go for most of the plot elements.

Personally, I consider Salvation's Reach to be the point where the series jumped the shark.
And as a general good jumping-off point for the whole series, you can skip the first two and go straight to Necropolis. It's where Dan really gets the hang of it, and most of the characters don't develop in the first two books - so they're pretty much still 'new in box' in Necropolis. It's from then on that the interesting stuff happens, and you won't regret starting from the 'beginning'. Even this far down the line, Necropolis is still my favourite GG book.

The original term is "Mary Sue", and since it's a general term for a phenomenon, trying to change it to reflect the gender with a new name that vaguely rhymes is rather silly, particularly as it loses sight of the trope's origins. Not that people don't do it anyways.

And the Ghost's are at their most mary sue in the first two books, after that things become Anyone Can Die (except Gaunt) and they start getting used like actual light infantry for the most part, so it's not nearly so bad.

Edit: actually, I just realized what the two posters above probably meant, so disregard that first part as actually relevant to the discussion at hand.

Dying doesn't make you not a gary stu, however, so whether tons of the characters die or not really doesn't determine what constitutes a gary stu.

A gary stu is defined by its characteristics. The Ghosts have unparalleled snipers, unparalleled scouts, unparalleled commanders in Gaunt (who is far more reasonable and strategic than 90% of the other commanders). Every regiment they meet is awed by their skills and tenacity, and either hate them or admire them. Despite being smaller than most of the other regiments and less well armed, they can hold their own against any opponent through sheer skill, and always inflict more damage than they take, they never get outsmarted, never get outmaneuvered, generally only coming close to losing due to being vastly outnumbered, etc. That tons of them die doesn't really matter.
