Granted, alien worlds give you a lot of license to ignore what we consider natural, but for something as familiar as snow and ice, I think "keeping it real" is the way to go, unless you have some compelling fluff that you want to represent, physically. What i do is mix dark brown paint with white glue, add a small dab of water, and apply to the base, then sprinkle this almost dust-like crushed rock on top. The "snow" soaks into the glue, and soaks the color up just a bit, so what it ends up looking like is a muddy battlefield with a fresh coating of snow.
If i had a decent camera, and models that didn't look hideously painted, I'd try and get the photos up for comparison.
