The next step in my Eldar army, a display board and a wargaming table.... need help!!

Ok so I went to my first tournament the other day, and my army was blown out of the water on the playing side. But on the painting side, it looked alright, but I was missing a big element I haven't thought about until this point, a display board. Now I have based all my minis to a semi-pro degree (my theme is snow/ a little ice world) and I wanted to ask the Dakka community on ways how to build a display board. Now talking to some people what they seem to do is find a nice wood picture frame, cut out the picture and the backing, put a piece of plywood in the back, cut some type of foam and place it inside it, and paint it up. Is this the way a lot of people do it? I would like to have a nice frame, and be sturdy. Any help? I that is all I really know, I have no idea what size frame to get, what kind of foam to buy, or anything. Anyone who has build one before please comment and help me out, pics are great. Thanks a ton! -King

There are a few tutorials in the P&M Tutorials subsection. In fact quite a few.

Also YouTube is a great place to start and see how they are built.

There are companies like Battle Geeks that even make them for you, just add flock and paint....

Size of frame depends on the size of your army. Grab yourself a big sheet of paper and lay your forces out on top, marking their positions and sketching around them where you want to add terrain features - it really helps to do these preliminary sketches at full scale, since you have elements that need to fit in the spaces you're leaving.

Bear in mind that commonly available frames maintain similar proportions and come in stock sizes, so try to shape your layout accordingly. 16"x20" and 18"/20"x24" are the most likely candidates, depending on your usual points level and build. 24"x36" (the upper limit for most off-the-shelf frames) gives you plenty of space for a large army and impressive terrain, but is too unwieldy to comfortably carry around, even if it's not too heavy (especially if laden with models).

Also take note of the materials use when shopping for frames. Many sold are not actually made of wood. Composite frames (HDF) are perfectly resilient, but foamed plastic tends to fail at the joints under far less stress than wood or composite frames. Hollow plastic frames are even worse, for this (easy to spot, as they're usually just backed by cardboard, screwed into internal posts). Hollow plastic can't be screwed into with any strength, either, for attaching the backing (or should you want to add handles). Frames covered in gesso or plaster are usually strong enough, being made primarily from wood or HDF, but are a pain to work with, as the finish chips quite easily - an army tray takes far more abuse than a picture hanging on a wall, even if you're reasonably careful. Granted, permanently attaching a plywood or MDF backing will strengthen any frame, but you at least need enough strength to make a solid attachment.

As for the rest of the construction, the foam most commonly used is the same as with any other table/terrain project - extruded polystyrene insulation boards. They're available at any big-box home improvement store (Home Depot, Lowes, etc.), usually in either blue or pink. The foam is far more stiff and resilient than the expanded polystyrene commonly used as packing material, as well as having a better texture to work with (EPS is formed of lots of balls packed together, which tend to pop off on a whim and leave a nubby texture - insulation boards have a tight, even grain that can be made reasonably smooth with a bit of work).

Really, once you've secured your frame and backing, the display board is built like any other terrain project - generalized tutorials will give you everything you need. If you're looking for inspiration, though, I believe Terranscapes, on Youtube, did an icy cliff display board for his Dark Elves a while back.
