general questions

hello Dakka members!

i have a few questions i want to ask before im geting started with my new army.

right now i have two serious armies that i boht like and one that i started but stopped early on and is now making into my third and most awesome army!

my two serious armies are tyranids and blood angels and are all painted and done.

the army im making now is being redirected from a ultrasmurfs army to ANGRY MARINES!

i decided i wanted to make a more chill and fun army to play with. so to the questions

do you guys have any cool ideas for conversinos ( have not done alot of them but a few in the tyranid army )

and do you guys have any good tips for painting yellow and the rest ( on both my other armies i have used Quickshade dipping and thus not have had to make much of a fuss with painting since dipping is a somewhat of an autowin)

and if you guys have any onther general tips feel freee to put them in!

i can post my force chart if it would help!

with regards, Niyar

general questions

Yellow can be a problematic color, as far as coverage is concerned - I'd suggest priming yellow (or priming white then spraying yellow, if you can't find a good colored primer and want the more resilient base), then shading down and highlighting up from there. If you're coming from two "basecoat, dip, done" armies, the sheer number of layers required to get a smooth yellow might break your spirit before you finish your first squad. Since Angry Marines are mostly yellow, best to let a can do most of the work for you.

As far as conversions are concerned, a lot can be done with part swaps - bare and overly muscled Catachan arms, running Khorne beserker legs, Ork choppas, etc. Terminator parts are popular add-ons, as well - the oversized parts make boots stompier and powerfists... fistier? The codex-specific weapons are a bit trickier, as the usual 3rd party bits sellers don't make power wrenches, bats, etc. - those usually involve scratchbuilding. Most shouldn't be too tricky, though, requiring nothing but plasticard and some patience (although a bit of putty work might speed things up).

Most of what I've seen has been pretty basic, actually, barring a few standout models, with most of the effect pulled off in the painting. The Dakka Gallery has a decent number of Angry Marine models to draw inspiration from, without all of the drawings that might clutter a more general Google search (which are useful in their own right, but more for what to do than how to do it).

general questions

I spray yellow over Vallejo dark yellow primer. Still takes a couple of coats even with an airbrush.

Also to hand paint it's all about the base layers. White seems like a good idea until you try it. Trust me I've tried it plus then it looks uber flat and has no depth.

When I paint it up it's usually over black. I go with a mid-tone brown, then a yellow ochre which is like a light kahki color followed by a couple of layers of yellow.
Then wash, then back with the main yellow, then highlights of yellow cut with white.
