Warmachine High Command - New Deckbuilding Game

They announced this at TempleCon and it got a mention in that thread, but I think it could warrant some discussion on its own:

Personally, I think this is a pretty great idea that fits within the universe pretty darn well.

Things, based on the video, I like:

-- Aesthetically, it looks just aces. I love the consistency with the present Warmachine stuff, especially in regards to symbols. Great design.
-- I like the notion that each different warcaster is going to bring different things to the table game play wise. I really hope they're reflective of the factions
-- I like that the game is going to be easily expandable. At their worst, Deckbuilders are a cash cow. At their best, they're money printing machines. I hope this is more the latter.
-- I like that the game isn't a Bodgers or Level 7 Game. While the Bodgers games are 'okay,' Level7[escape] was just so unispired to me. I like that they're doing some alternative games within their core universe.

Anyone else have thoughts on this guy?

Huh.. So warmachine isn't really my thing specifically because (at least in my area) the community seems to favour pure gaming over the more 'hobby' aspects of it, which leads to me feeling it is more like a card game with figures attached.

Funny how things turn out ain't it?

In my view, Warmahordes is MtG: The Miniatures Game. It's a big reason why I won't play it competitively; I simply don't have the time in my life to learn all the combos. I probably won't with High Command, either, but at least the $$ entry point will be around $50 or less .

Plus, I've always loved the Warmachine art. Granted, Vlad's shoulder pads are still ridiculous, but I love the aesthetic.

I'm looking forward to learning a lot more about this and hope it's a GenCon debut.

Warmachine High Command - New Deckbuilding Game

Looks very interesting. I couldn't figure this out from the video, so maybe much of this is not yet known, but does anyone know:

1) will it be collectible (ie, random) format, or living (ie, non-random) format?

2) will it follow a Dominion type format (you build your deck as you go) or the more traditional format of coming to the table with your deck built? I'd assume the latter, but the video hinted that maybe that wasn't the case (something about each faction having its own "market"? I didn't quite get what they meant)

Looks rather cool, and with a handful of friends who play the minis game, I'll likely be checking this one out!

I don't think we know yet. I'd imagine it will be more like an LCG If privateer is smart, and seeing how their last venture into collectible games sadly failed, I'm wagering they'll go that direction.

It looks to me, based on that intro video, that you'll have the option of 5 war casters for each faction that each come with their own card sub-deck. Then you shuffle them all together. I really hope that's the case because that would just be the tits. Plus it would give you a ton of replay ability options and would make booster decks easy. Want to use Kara Sloane now? Well here's her caster card and her 20 card sub deck.

Or at least that's what I'm hoping?

I'm excited to learn more.

Deck Building Games are distinguished by the mechanic of gradually building your deck as you play. LCGs include Netrunner and Game of Thrones (and are entirely the domain of FFG as far as I know), while deck building games include Ascension, Rune Wars, Dominion, Legendary, etc.

Automatically Appended Next Post:

cincydooley wrote:

Laughing Man wrote:

silent25 wrote:
Intrigued.
As for the use of multiple warcasters, look at Legendary: It incorporates separate decks for different heroes, so that one game might see you using Gambit, Cyclops, Hawkeye, Hulk, and Captain America, and the next Spiderman, Deadpool, Wolverine, Storm, and Rogue. Heck, it even gets more subdivide-ey when you look at the villain deck and how it's constructed every game, and yet it's still unmistakably a deck-building game in the vein of Ascension.
