Basing general query

Hi Dakka,

I had a few questions about how the basing works. I've seen some pretty awesome custom bases and of course i'd like to know how it's done.

I'm based in Australia and its a bit difficult to get my hands on any good flock, i was wondering if there were any sites people could recommend? Or brands? After my experiences with Citadel products i'm not too sure if i want to spend a fortune on a few grams of static grass...

I'll be looking for a mainly dirt/death base, so probably a dark to mahogany brown, with pieces of rubble around.

Thanks guys!

you can just use sand. then paint it brown. Maybe mix some sand/pva glue/ brown paint all togther then wash. For flock i use gale force nine and woodland scenic stuff. You can also google homemade flock and make it with saw dust and paint.

There are plenty of places in Australia that sell good basing supplies, you just aren't looking in the right places.

If you can find it check out mininatur, I managed to get some from a store in Sydney, but they don't seem to stock it any more. However, I believe Irresistibleforce do stock it, so I'd just give them a quick google and check out there site. They are based in brisbane and have quite a large range of gear.

Also if you want to go with galeforce nine gear, check out thecombatcompany. They come out of Sydney and are awesome to deal with.

Basing is one of the most freely creative concepts we currently have access to anymore. Your only limted by your imagination to create wonderful effects.

Pine tree bark= nice rock bases by drybrushing grays
corkboard= nice grimdark style rubble/urban/street terrain.
rocksalt+sand = nice uneven rocky/gravel texture to bases that can be painted to great affect.

Winter is right, there are plenty of places here in oz that sell good basing supplies. I can vouch for Irresistible Force as it's my local. If you check out their page you'll see that Gale Force 9 make a wide variety of grasses and rubble and sand etc. I have the green, dark green & arid grasses and the dirt. I quite like them. The marsh blend might be dark enough for you. I haven't used Mininatur but Irresistible Force do stock it.

Check the yellow pages out for any model train stores near you, they always sell basing supplies.

And as others have said, there are plenty of readily available materials you can use such as corkboard for rubble etc. Although if you're nowhere near a beach, it might be better to just buy some.

for larger rocks as well I recommend finding some corkboard or getting those wood chips they make for the garden. There's a lot about, just need to keep an open mind about it.
