How many coats do you do for Space Marine armor?

I'm just going for table quality work right now. My Ork boys have looted assault marine jump packs cut in half as their Stormboy Jump packs. I am currently painting them Dark Angel Green, but I can barely see the color. Primed in black.

How can I get the dark angel green to pop a bit more.

Undercoat them with a brighter colour. Or highlight them with a brighter colour. If you are basing them black you are setting yourself up for working additiftly. If you prime them white you are working substractifly.

I normally do an undercoat, then basecoat, wash, layer, highlight or drybrush, then finally a glaze.
I use the highlight on the characters, drybrush on the rank and file for speed's sake.
I use the schemes found here, using the second layer as a highlight.
They're pretty simple schemes to do, but look good when you pull them off, and it's got guides for Dark Angels on there. People seem to forget about this little gem of the GW site.

I had the same issue, Hagis, but I found that a coat of one of the Citadel base coats fixed the problem. You'd be looking for Caliban Green normally, or Loren Forest (or Deathworld Forest) if you want a lighter hue. If your store still stocks the older paint pots, then you're looking for Orkhide Shade (followed by Gretchin Green and Knarloc Green). The base coats have a much higher opacity than normal Citadel paints, and will cover the black very well. SInce they are the same general color, it will give you much greater mileage out of your Dark Angels green.

I do a green army as well (albeit a lighter green than yours, but greens should share coverage properties) and I only have to do two coats. (Basecoat plus normal coat.) Hopefully that helps, and good luck!
