Decal Silvering and Paint Chipping

Just a couple questions for you guys:

Is there something different about GW decals? I know some are thicker than others, having used many in scale modeling. However I've never had such an issue with silvering as I have with GW's! Despite a nice gloss coat, MicroSet, and multiple coats of Micro Sol, I still get some. From a distance it's not so bad, but when you pick up some of my models for a closer look, you can certainly see it. Seems to be worst on grey so far. I can't think of anything else to try. Any other tips? Are FW decals any different?

Also, which paint chipping technique do you all prefer, sponging or hairspray? Why? How many use both?

Personally, I've only tried the sponge technique and like it, but have yet to try the hairspray. I intend to use it on my next transport/tank belly. I think it'll work much better for scratches than what I've managed to achieve with sponges.
