Specteral Effects

One of the things that impressed me about the Vampire Counts was its ghostly units. I've found tutorials on how to achieve ghostly effects, but what I want to know about is color choice, when applying these effects.

I've seen lots of necrotic greens, and ghostly blues, and even a very nice purple (which made the mortis engine it was used on look awesome). What about red? My army is mainly consisted of skeletons and shades, so it lacks that lovely visceral quality that you get with zombies and ghouls. Then I thought, what about using red for the necrotic energy? (spirits, skeleton inner glow, ect) Nothing says 'Vampire!' like blood red. But I'm not sure if its feasible. I'd like the red spirits, but I'm afraid of A) doing it too thick, so it looks like a solid thing instead of being ethereal, or B) coming out pink. Less 'Rage filled spirit' and more 'Deceased Lord Laffy Taffy'.

Would I simply paint them in light greys and then use a red wash? Or would it be better to paint them a light red, wash red, and then give them some stark white or light grey dry brushing? Or something else entirely?

Specteral Effects

I think you could you try going from red to orange to yellow and have it almost turn out almost like a spectral flame. Kinda thing. Check out the WM Khador DoomReavers swords for the effect and see if its into the style your looking for.

Hope that helps.

You could always try using Clear paints like those made by Tamiya, it can be used really really easily for a visceral blood, and could come out pretty good for glowy things.
