Edit: Yellows, browns and blues are pretty common colours for orks, any earthy tone seems to blend well with them also.

Either method lends a degree of cohesion while still leaving individual models decently varied.

Regarding your followup question, you can certainly leave your primer uncovered, if it's the appropriate color for part of the model. It will, however, end up looking rather flat, so I'd recommend giving it a bit more attention (highlights, etc.), lest it simply look unfinished.
