Like using purple as a main paint and then use orange (and/or other bright colours) for details.

I have the same problem: how to paint Eldar? It would be outstanding to do something different from the traditional happy rainbow warhost. Some ideas could be to inspire from those tiny decorative drawings in the new Codex, where armour and weapons have an aged look; not worn off, just aged. Or you could also have a look at some insect shells, although I have no idea how to replicate their shine.
