1500 pts Crusade: Chaos Space Marines vs Dark Angels

The Sisters of Battle had not been long on the ravaged surface of Wiebelich III when one of their patrols lost contact. They had last been confirmed within the ruins of an old Imperial Cult monastery, long torn down by the Chaos forces that still roamed freely across the planet. Vowing not to let the Servants of the Emperor fall unnoticed, a small group of Dark Angels set out to defend the weak.

+++

1500 points, Chaos Marines vs Dark Angels
Mission: Crusade (3 Objectives)
Deployment: Hammer and Anvil

Neon Shadow-
Phantasus, Level 2 Slaanesh Sorceror with Sigil of Corruption
Morpheus, Slaanesh Daemon Prince with Power Armour, Wings, Burning Brand and Level 2 Psyker
12 CCW and Bolt Pistol Chaos Marines marked by Slaanesh with a Flamer, Plasma Pistol, Champion with a Powersword and the Banner of Excess
21 Cultists, 10 with Autoguns, Champion with Shotgun and 2 Heavy Stubbers
8 Terminators with a Combiflamer, Combimelta, Reaper Autocannon, Powerfist, Chainfist and Champion with Boon of Chaos (rolled Warp Frenzy)
1 Helbrute with a Plasma Cannon and Power Scourge
4 Chaos Bikers with a Plasma Gun
4 Chaos Spawn

Dark Angels-
Belial
Level 2 Librarian
10 Tactical Marines with Plasma Cannon, Flamer and Sergeant with Melta Bombs
10 Tactical Marines with Plasma Cannon, Flamer and Sergeant with Melta Bombs
10 Deathwing Terminators with 2 Assault Cannons
5 Deathwing Knights, Master with Flail of Vengence (?)
1 Dreadnought with Plasma Cannon
3 Ravingwing Bikers

Neon Shadow Forces
CCW – CCW and Bolt Pistol Marines, accompanied by Sorceror
H – Helbrute
C – Cultists
S – Spawn
B – Bikers

Dark Angels Forces
T1 – Tactical Squad 1
T2 – Tactical squad 2
D – Dreadnought
L – Librarian
R – Ravenwing

All other forces began in reserve.

Warlord Powers:
Chaos: Hatred Incarnate
Dark Angels: The Hunt

Psychic Powers:
Both Chaos Psykers rolled Ecstatic Seizures and Psychic Shriek.
Librarian rolled Iron Arm and Inferno.

+++

The Ravenwing drove their steel mounts hard, roaring into the vanguard ahead of their brethren. Somewhere in these ruins there would be survivors and the Ravenwing had the speed and power to find them first. As they sped along the dusty ground of a makeshift trenchline, a swirl of dust at the far end reveal enemy bikes heading towards them. Before they could respond, boltfire and plasma bursts tore through the air around them, sending two of them toppling from their bikes with screams of pain. Shocked, the Ravenwing turned sharply, kicking up clouds of smoke and dust from their tyres as they drove back towards the support of their fellow Dark Angels.
A terrible shape came cackling through the air to the west, high above the ruined bulk of the monastery. Flames belched from its unnatural shadow. Behind the racing black-armoured bikes, in the forests that had rown up close to the abandoned trenches, other shapes were skittering and lumbering through the brush, splintering wood and piercing the air with their noises.
Desperate to support their brothers, the Ravenwing opened fire with their own bikes’ weapons, managing to sear the flying beast and send it tumbling to the ground. It impacted with a roar and a shriek that chilled the mighty Astartes.

+++

Turn 1
The Ravenwing Scouted forward into the Trenches after Deployment, moving towards the Chaos line.
The Daemon Prince zoomed through the ruins. The CCW Marines moved under the stairway towards the objective in the ruins. The Cultists struggled through the forest, planning to take hold of the central objective and then sit on the hill and avoid any trouble. The Bikers moved up into the trenches. The Spawn raced through the forest. The Daemon Prince used the Burning Brand to slaughter Tactical Squad 2, sending them running backwards, covered in flames. The Chaos Bikers killed two Ravenwing, breaking them also and driving them from the trench.
The Librarian set two cultists on fire. One Tactical Squad fired at the Chaos Bikers, but the heavy trench walls saved them. The other fired at the Daemon Prince but didn’t manage to cause any damage. The Ravenwing managed to fire at the Daemon Prince, knocking it to the ground where it took its first wound. The Dreadnought took the chance to open fire with its Plasma Cannon, managing to take another.

+++

The massive beast that had flown into their midst rose from the ground and strode forward, launching huge torrents of flame from the gun it swung as easily as a toy. The soldiers of the Dark Angels Squad Thaddeus held their ground before it, unable to focus their firepower on it before it leaped at their honoured Dreadnought Edmund, tangling its mechanical limbs and tearing cables with a great black sword that drank in the light. Within moments there was a huge explosion, and as their photovisors reacted to the flare the Dark Angels saw the beast come towards them.
‘Kill it,’ ordered their sergeant, but as they opened fire, the great Plasma Cannon they bore with them vented gouts of superheated plasma over them all. They cursed in the Emperor’s name and struggled to avoid the glowing fumes, but still found two of their number lying still. They looked up just in time to see the monster fall upon them.
In the ruins, a single squad of the legendary Deathwing materialised from the air, spitting death at the twisted Marines that they found encamped inside the ruins. Between the Deathwing and their foe they could see a young woman of the Sororitas hunched over a small holographic generator that shielded her from the enemy’s sight, whispering prayers for the Emperor to protect her. The brightly armoured enemy launched forward, firing as they came.
On the western edge of the field, another squad of brave Dark Angels fought under the nearby gaze of their brother-librarian Konrad. The Astartes of Squad Matthias held their ground as twisted monsters more tentacles and claw than beast erupted from the forest and came stampeding through the shallow waters of a stagnant pond, kicking up a spray of water. They trumpeted as they came, swinging their foul extremities into the armour of the Dark Angels.

+++

Turn 2
The Daemon Prince glided over the ruins and sent fire from the Burning Brand washing over the Dreadnought and killing the remaining Ravenwing Bikers behind and then charging the big metal machine. The Chaos Spawn charged out of the forest, through the pond and into the Tactical Marines. The Helbrute crossed the hill and the Cultists began heading across the trench for an objective. The Bikers continued down the trenchline. The CCW Marines ran forward to claim the objective, revealing a Scattershield. The Daemon Prince smashed the Dreadnought, making it explode and taking another wound.
The Deathwing and Deathwing Knights appeared this turn. The Knights appeared behind the Cultists, and the Deathwing dropped right in front of the CCW Marines. Shooting managed to kill one or two of the CCW Marines. The Tactical Squad opened fire on the Daemon Prince that was right in front of them, scattering their Plasma Cannon shot right back onto themselves and killing two marines. They took off one more wound, leaving the Daemon Prince with a single wound. The Tactical Squad fighting the Spawn broke from combat this turn, moving further behind the ruined wall they had been holding.

+++

The Librarian gestured at the distant mass of traitorous heretics that swarmed across the hill and trenches, smiling grimly as two of the erupted into flames. The fire flared and sputtered unnaturally, licking at the rest of the heretics. On the ground beneath him, Squad Matthias fought the spawn of the warp with no quarter, emptying round after round of their bolters into one beast’s gaping saliva dripping maw or the suddenly appearing eye of another. As he watched, they fell, one by one. But Squad Matthias managed to kill one of the beasts as they died, then another.
Beyond his reach, Konrad could see a flash of light as squad of hulking enemy troops stepped from a tear in reality, ponderously moving towards the ruins. The gigantic mechanical figure that had just reached the crest of the hill turned away from him and disappeared down the other side. Konrad frowned as he wondered what the thing had seen. He hadn’t been able to see what had happened to the giant monster that had ravaged his ancient friend Edmund either. In preparation, he invoked the mighty Emperor’s name and felt his limbs invigorated with the strength of the Golden Throne.

+++

Turn 3
The Daemon Prince Branded the Tactical Squad and charged. The Spawn recharged the tactical squad, taking wounds from overwatch. The Helbrute moved back over the hill, and the Chaos Bikers clambered out of the trenches and over the hill to join the Cultists in opening fire on the Knights. From their teeming masses of dice, the Chaos forces combined managed to kill one Knight. The Chaos Terminators appeared just outside the ruins holding the CCW Marines, Deathwing and an objective. The Sorcerer cast Seizures on the Deathwing, managing to kill one. The Daemon Prince wiped out the Tactical Squad 2, the Spawn and Tactical Squad 1 took minor hits from each other. The Helbrute charged the Deathwing Knights, killing one. They used Smite mode with their Maces, removing two hullpoints but only rolling stunned and shaken damage results. The CCW Marines charged the Deathwing, losing the Feel No Pain banner to overwatch and subsequently getting wiped out in combat. I was cursing my short-sighted placement of the banner bearer, until I realised that the squad would have been instakilled by the Deathwing Powerfists anyway. Perhaps I should have just run away…
The Librarian attempted to keep the cultists on fire and then cast Iron Arm on himself. The Knights didn’t manage to glance the Helbrute who killed one more. The Deathwing moved up, shot and assaulted the Chaos Terminators. The Deathwing Sergeant and Terminator Champion got locked in a challenge, with the Chaos Champion coming out on top but rolling no new boons from the chaos gods.

+++

Flames washed around Konrad and he felt his skin tighten from the pain, though the Emperor ensured his safety. He swung his legs over the edge of the rubble he stood atop and lept to the ground, leaning against the wall and concentrating on his own flames, causing flares and explosion among the heretics that still covered the far end of the field. He heard them cheer and watched in horror as they lifted a young woman in broken armour from the ground. He found he could not look away as they mob began to tear the Sororitas apart, even in the midst of the battle.
Suddenly a group of the enemy bikers came roaring over the lip of the trench, launching themselves through the air at Konrad. He felt the impact of their bolts, and then the heavy push of the bikes, but his might was augmented by the will of the Emperor himself. He swung his sword and felt a grim pleasure as it sliced through all through of his foe, removing heads and limbs at once. He placed one foot against the warm engine of a downed bike and surveyed the field.

+++

Turn Four
The Daemon Prince moved over to a tower in the back of the Dark Angel deployment zone and managed to Brand the Librarian. The Bikers turned to move in and shoot the Librarian, then decided to try and charge him, hoping to smash him with their Hammer of Wrath attacks. This had no effect, and then the Librarian killed them all with his Force Sword. The Helbrute didn’t kill any of the Knights. The Cultists moved up to claim the objective, rolling nothing of interest for mysterious objectives. The Spawn and Tactical Marines knocked each other about a bit more. The Librarian cast Iron Arm on himself again. The Deathwing/Terminator fight continued, mostly on the side of the Deathwing.

+++

A bellowing roar from behind him alerted Konrad to the towering beast’s presence. Its eyes glittered with a hideously intelligent hatred, and Konrad had moments to observe the size of the blade the thing carried before he was desperately swinging his own in defence. The monster screamed into Konrad’s face, hot foul air making the Librarian gag. He blocked and parried with all his strength, sending each of the thing’s blows sliding past his armour. Panting with effort, Konrad smiled and opened his mouth to curse the monster in the name of the Emperor. Before he could, a black sword the size of his leg shattered his head.

+++

Turn Five
The Daemon Prince moved up to Brand then assault the Librarian. The Tactical Squad finished off the last of the Spawn and moved up behind the Daemon Prince and Librarian. The Helbrute killed one more Deathwing Knight, leaving only the Master. In the Chaos turn the Daemon Prince did no wounds to the Librarian, in a horrific display of twos and ones. Luckily the Librarian was unable to wound the Daemon Prince either. In the Dark Angel turn, the Daemon Prince finally finished off the Librarian. Belial finished off the Chaos Terminators in the Dark Angel turn, consolidating to just outside the 3” of the objective behind them. If the game ended now, Chaos would win.

+++

Standing on the bodies of three dead betrayals of nature, the remaining members of Squad Matthias poured boltshells into the last still moving body. They all held their bolters close to its hide, watching the flesh erupt and tear as explosions ripped through it. Only when they were finally sure that each beast was dead did they stand aside. Only three remained. They nodded to one another, even now preparing their remembrance rites in preparation for the return to the Chapter in sorrow.
They moved off to find Brother-Librarian Konrad, to check the battle situation and rounded the corner to find the Librarian’s shattered corpse lying on top of a pile of broken bikes, smoke and steam rising from the blood smeared wall. Standing over the devastation was a giant monster, angelic wings sprouting from its back. Before they could lift their guns, it had pointed a sleek silver weapon at them. Red and yellow filled their vision as flames belched towards them, and then they saw no more.

+++

Turn Six
Belial and the last remaining member of the Deathwing moved to claim the Scatterfield marker once more. The Daemon Prince flew back into the Dark Angel deployment and Branded the remaining three Tactical Marines, killing them all. The Helbrute finally killed the Master of the Deathwing Knights, leaving two models on the Dark Angel side.

Random Game Length – The Game Ends

+++

Belial scooped up the Sister of Battle and cradled her in his huge armoured arms.
‘Do not fear little sister,’ he said. ‘We have come to bring you back.’
He looked at the craven semi-human thing that the Deathwing Astartes beside him held tight. The Chaos Sroceror may or may not have anything to do with the reports of Fallen that had come from this world. But either way, he would tell the Interogators what he knew.
‘Come,’ he told his brother marine. ‘We must leave now.’ Shrieks of joy came from the fields beyond the monstary. ‘We have done all we can.’
Together, the Dark Angels teleported from the battlefield.

+++
Victory Points
Neon Shadow: 5
First Blood – Ravenwing
Linebreaker – Daemon Prince
Objective – Cultists

Dark Angels: 5
Warlord – Sorceror
The Hunt – Sorceror
Objective – Deathwing

Draw

What do you think? Enjoy the narrative segments? Think either of us should have done anything drastically different? Once we have more fully painted armies and terrain, I’ll try to get some mid-game photos too.
