I'm considering a small mech IG force in the near future (after university priorities), and i wanted to do them up in a winter style - i was thinking 6th Armoured Regiment from IA 11.

That got me thinking, what weathing pigments should i get for snow? The FW site only has 'grey ash' pigment, but thats grey not white. Also, should i use browns? i guess there will be some mud, but surely not that much?

I'd appreciate any help, thanks

White chalk ground to a fine powder might work too. The same book advises colored chalks as a cheaper alternative to weathering powders.


Aside from snow (which should probably be restricted to clumps stuck in the treads, considering how hot a running tank gets) the big thing would be rust on the treads and around the base of the vehicle, rather than mud (any mud on the ground being frozen, and snowmelt serving to wash mud off the tank). Teacher at the Masterclass warned us to stay away from pastels and chalk as you are not dealing with pure pigments and the actual finish is not as nice as it could be.

Baking soda can change color after some time.

SW. It's beneficial, at least in that use, to put a base of white paint where you'll apply it. Though for the vehicles I don't think that is applicable. As mentioned, I've seen that used to do snow packed into tank treads. I've thought of using it, but not sure how much snow would actually get packed in like that on treads.

I'd stick to a dusting on the surfaces of the vehicles, just like cars get driving through heavy snow. The pictures of a Malcador in snowy terrain in IA Model Masterclass look like maybe 10-15% covering, apparently applied after "Mud made from a mix of soil, PVA wood glue, plaster of paris, a small amount of static grass, and earth coloured weathering powders was roughly applied to the tracks." So I suppose I was wrong about it being rust.


For gaming, I'd leave it off the bottom of the vehicle and double up on the sealing with gloss varnish (followed by a coat of matte varnish to remove the glossy finish).
