Warhound Titan

Hi all,

I'm fairly new to the Forum and really still finding my feet. It's good to meet you all.

I have uploaded an old blog I wrote when building my scratch-built Warhound Titan to my *new* blog: http://wargames-wasteland.blogspot.co.uk/search/label/Titan

I could do with getting back into the Titan project and tidying it up a bit, but I've got too much stuff on to worry about it right now.

For anyone who's interested in building one of these, you can download the plans from here: http://www.build-40k.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/DIY-Warhound-Titan-Plans-Templates.pdf

I would estimate the complete building costs for this project to be around £10 - £15 / $15 - $20. Waaaay cheaper than buying the Forgeworld model

I know the Titan in its current state is a bit "rough and ready", but I'd still be interested in your comments. What do you think?

Cheers,
me

Re:Warhound Titan

Nice blog on the build. I have had these plans printed out and ready to build for a while now. I started with the head as that will be the measure of the quality of the build and be the deciding factor as to whether my build technique works. I am using card stock as the base and then adding plastic sheeting of varying thicknesses to provide stability and detail. Your post is making me want to get my ass in gear with this project.

I really want to add some lighting effects. I also have a ton of pieces to use from the storm raven kit and some drop pod parts that will make my cockpit come alive. I see that some of your edges have the same issue that i was running into of not being a hard lined edge. I will be experimenting with using greenstuff or extra armor plating to compensate.

Once i get back in gear on this project I'll update you guys with a link.

Have you built any more war hound titans ? What was your total build time on the model? Do you think building a second or third one will be quicker from your experience?

Warhound Titan

Hi

thanks for the feedback. I've only built one Warhound (who needs more than one?!?) as I was challenged to do so by my son. As mentioned at the foot of the post, I quickly moved on to build a Stompa afterwards which was much simpler. I'll put a post up about that shortly.

The Warhound start-finish time was 3 months based on about 2 hours work, three times per week. I got distracted into other tasks whilst doing it though: the Titan when built needed to be fielded and for that I needed an opposing army. We decided to play Imperial troops (my Imperial Guard and a friend's Marines) against an allied force of Orks (I had a bucket full of bits which I had to quickly assemble, including scratchbuilding a Trukk, a battlewagon and the aforementioned Stompa and then basecoat) and Necrons - that was the "other scratchbuild project" mentioned in the Titan blog: for another christmas present I scratchbuilt a Necron monolith for another friend.

Like I said in my blog, there are a lot of problems with those plans so take care to reinforce everything. I think my biggest problem though was the cardstock used - plasticard when scored and folded tends to break along the fold. Card-card tends - as you've noticed - to not give a hard edge, and is also prone to tearing. For the most part I stuck with plasticard and ran a bead of hot-glue along the inside of the fold, but I have to say that got very, very difficult and messy in places and I wasn't happy with the technique.

I'd be very interested to hear what you come up with to solve the problem. *Then* I might build another one

I think I will change gears and start with the feet, leaving the head for last. I bought some scale I beams, they should be able to be slapped in where ever support is needed. That or some foam board. I might also use pink foam sheet insulation as "filler" to give certain parts more strength.

Got to clear off my desk and get started on this project.

Who needs more than one war hound? When they are next to free from the printer, why not??? Especially if I can fix the edge issues.

Good idea about the filler - very low weight to won't add stress to the legs too.

Good luck to you - if you start a diary of the project please let me know - I'd love to see how you get on with it and will put a link to it on my blog too, if you like.
