need some help with this paint effect !

Hey dakka, im starting up a new Necron army, and ive decided to try out a specific white theme. I've painted a few small armys now and im getting decent at it ... but there's still a few techniques i haven't really got down yet, one of which is is battle damage. now ive looked up a few tuts. and ive done some simple damage on my rhinos and what not but all of the ones i've read have been for .....more damage? (for lack of a better term) than im looking for with this project. i found a pic of some immortals i really like the look of for this theme and id like to try to for something near to this effect. So as usual when im in need i turn to dakka ! im hoping someone can either A: tell me a decent way to mmick this effect or B: point me to a tut that has something like this. Thanks in advance for any help !

Whoops meant to post this in the other painting and modeling topic area, not the finished tut area ! (can i get a move over there if possible)

Hey mate.

If you need to contact a mod for something, such as moving a thread started in the wrong forum, click the little yellow triangle the top right of your post and then let them know.

~~~~~
Not sure if you have seen these already but here are two excellent tutorials by the uber talented Gitsplitta. They might be helpful.
One on chipping.
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/460556.page
One on rust & soot.
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/460487.page
Those Necrons look like they belong to MajorTom11 so maybe try PMing him and asking him how he achieved that look. Or have a look at his blog. He may have explained it there.
Moving thread to P&M main area.
If you would get a higher resolution pic of the models it would help. I can't see the effect you want to achieve.
need some help with this paint effect !
It is tough to see, but it's pretty subtle. There are two ways I can think of to achieve the small paint chips.
One is to just lightly dot it on with a fine detail brush like a 0.
The other is to sponge it on with those little make up applicators for eyeshadow. You should be able to find bags of them at a dollar store or equivalent for cheap. They make great random chips like sponging on a tank, but on a smaller scale more appropriate for troops. They can also be rinsed and reused if you do so before the paint dries on them which clogs the recesses.
I prefer Mournfang/Bestial brown straight, or a mix of Mournfang and Leadbelcher.
I've also seen Tin Bitz with a some Mournfang Brown or black mixed work well too.
You could also use Rhinox Hide, which is a very dark brown, but I think on that scale it would just look black.
Automatically Appended Next Post:
For fresher dings and scrapes, use a little bit of a lighter metal to highlight like Ironbreaker/Chainmail or Runefang/Mithril Silver. I personally think Ironbreaker would be better as it's not too stark or bright compared to the Runefang.
