pfft, guitarists are two a penny and easy to replace. If you find a good bass player or drummer hold on to them.

On topic. Its always worth paying for a teacher, they can spot your weak areas and help improve them. That said the basics can be self taught easy enough.
Re:Programs for learning to play a Bass Guitar

Nah, take up the bass, man! It's a cool instrument and you'll definitely be in demand. Despite what certain posters have said, bass is its own thing. It's a skill-set of its own. People who believe otherwise are just crappy musicians. Take it from me - I play bass, drums (+ other percussion instruments), guitar, keys, I am a classically trained vocalist, plus I have a degree in music, have had management and recording contracts, and have been performing various roles within bands for 16 years. Anyone who tells you that bass is just for people who can't cut it on 6-string is joking, or a joke.

Be warned though, it takes years to get good on the bass. The learning curve is much more gradual than say, kit. Groove is an elusive, almost mythical thing, and as a bassist you will need it in abundance. Start smoking pot.
