I'm not a fan of weird paperclip or flying base. The one exception would be Tau battlesuits, because their ankles are week.

Maybe have one leg touch the base and run a sturdy pin through it to support the model?

I'm a big fan of making whatever suspension device is used as unobtrusive as possible.

For example:

It doesn't really show well in the pic, but this guy is held to the base just by a piece of wire through the corner of the 'hand' into the rock below, so it looks like it is just clipping the rock as he sails over.

Having said that, for bog standard gaming stuff I don't really care that much, and generally just use clear flight stems.

I agree with insaniak - the less obtrusive, the better. I've seen people build up massive basing elements to hide supporting rods for flying models, before, and the result is more conspicuous than a single bit of black wire would have been. With a model like his, though, the pose allows for seamless attachment to a reasonably small and simple (for something in the distinctly "scenic" camp, at least) base. If you can make the model and base work together, by all means, do. If you can't, however, I'd say you're better off with a bit of black wire, hidden as best you can, than you would be trying to force a base to do all the work with subsequent additions.

Personally, I think flying stands are best left as they are, to be used by those who don't want to make something fancier. Clear pegs don't simply disappear, as one might hope, when surrounded by basing and terrain. If anything, I think it makes them all the more conspicuous. If you plan to use anything but the clear disk that comes with the peg on the bottom, I'd skip the standard flight stands.

So, depending on your level of time/dedication and the form of your models and bases, I'd say: Artful, but direct attachment > hidden black wire > exposed black wire > stock flight stand > clear peg and "regular" basing.
