Hey guys,

I'm an avid BA player and i'm thinking about crons for allies and a separate army. I'm going to go for a slow advance army (footslogging warriors) and night scythe'ing immortals for tank hunting.
What do you think of adding a monolith and some cc, what do you guys think?

depends on what you intend to play against, personally for footslogging necron armies i would take a ghost ark
for 85 points less than a monolith you lose a bit of your anti tank capabilities, but you gain a far more mobile troop repair unit.
They get to jink, and only have 1 less armor, which in my opinion makes them a bit more durable, not to mention that you can take a royal court inside them for your anti tank (harbingers of destruction, s8 ap2)

monoliths are great and are one of my favorite models (i have been playing since 3rd) they still have their place on the table, but it honestly depends who your opponents are.

as for cc in the necron list, i prefer scarabs to wraiths. They are a tarpit unit that functions as an anti tank squad as well. They simply cannot be ignored, and 30 wounds for 150 points isnt something your opponents can really laugh at.

Re:Starting a necrons army.

It really depends what you are putting them with and how many points you are playing. I only ever use a mono on skyshield landing pad these days. For Allies I think you would be better served with other units. An ark full of warriors is nice, but unless you have a second decent sized unit infront, you are not getting use out of repair barge. If you do put a unit it front, no less than 10 and stick a lord in there with a res orb.. between your RP rolls and repair barge you will be able to stay close to full. ( at least for a bit)

If your tank hunting with Immortals, I suggest you add a stormtek with voltaic for haywire. But if your doing scarabs, you are kind of doubling up here. I don't find them overly useful without spyders to make more. If you have great terrain placement it might not be to bad, otherwise they are going to get shot up. And with swarm doubling up your wounds... a decent round of shooting will cut your army in half or more. You get heavy shooters it could be worse.

If you want CC from the crons you are talking wraiths, 6 of them with a destoryer lord.. 3 whipcoils... couple naked ones up front to soak the shots. Use your jump on the assault for HoW, gets you 4 rending attacks per wraith and 4 from your lord with his scythe(plus 1 from the HoW). Wraiths have 3+ invul save which is why you want a few up front to soak shots. You add MSS and SW to the Dlord, that way you have a decent chance in challenges. Even without the lord 6 wraiths are a fair threat.

So, it really just depends what you want.

Re:Starting a necrons army.

I'm quite new to Necrons myself but I'd recommend going with scarabs instead of wraiths. My list has 2 units of 5 scarabs and 3 Spyders. Turn 1 the spyders boost 1 unit to 8 scarab bases which is a decent tarpit unit as well as ripping through armor with "entropic strike" making even the heaviest tanks susceptible to their strength 3 in only a few turns. They're also decent monstrous creature hunters with each having 4 attacks, even if they only wound on 6s I've always experienced that there's a good chance of getting at least 1 unsaved wound causing the monster to lose any armor save it has permanently. The spyders continue to build up the swarms and keep those warriors out of close combat for a while longer.

Re:Starting a necrons army.

Warrior based lists can go so many ways.

AV13 Wall:
Ghost Arks, Annihiliation Barges provide good support, replaces lost warriors, and gives your opponent stuff to deal with before he can even get to the Warriors. This will also give you mobility, protection, and cover when the vehicles get destroyed, which will come in handy with all the warriors.

Footslogging RP:
20 man Warrior squads on foot with a Res Orb in each squad is cheap, durable, and not easy to deal with. Take a 2nd Overlord for a 2nd Court, and load up on Crypteks for whatever you need. Tremorteks in each squad slowing your opponents down to Difficult Terrain will make you even more resistant to Assaults and help you control your shooting.

Monolith Surprise:
For each Monolith, put a squad of Warriors in Reserve. On the first turn each Monolith just brings in a squad of Warriors from Reserve to support whichever flank you need. Your opponent will try to hit your weak point, and then suddenly have another unit of Warriors to deal with. This is great if you are going first and your opponent tries to counter deploy on a flank restricting a lot of the numbers of firepower you have, which is a problem in Necron Foot based armies since we only have an effective range of 24" on virtually everything.

Any mix of these will also work, but plan on getting 3-4 squads of Warriors, with 14+ for each squad not in a vehicle. Supporting them with Immortals in a Nightscythe is good, but the Warriors will deal some serious hurt to any vehicles, since they don't have a Tesla Option. If you want to stick to the Warrior theme remember that you can put 15 Warriors in a Nightscythe which will still hunt vehicles, and drop 30 Rapid Fire Shots the turn it comes in, making them lethal to vehicles and infantry alike.

Nemesor Zahndrekh is a great choice for a Warlord for a Warrior heavy list. Tank Hunter/Night Vision on a unit, and the ability to remove Stealh/Shroud from an enemy unit will extend the damage your guns can do. In the event you are going to get charged, a preemptive counter-charge on a unit makes the unit pretty rough to deal with, even as warriors. (REALLY good on Flayed ones, more at bottom)

Problem with Warrior based lists is their 4+ sv. RP is nice, but with Warriors as your mainstay you'll be making a ton of RP rolls. So any cover you can get and/or Res Orbs will help reduce this impact. This also really hurts in combat, since you'll be taking more casualties. So either have a counter CC unit on hand or Tarpit units to hold off the more aggressive units till you're ready to deal with them.

If you're wanting to keep with a 'Theme', Flayed Ones are effectively warriors. Most Necron players won't even take them because they aren't as mobile as Wraiths/Scarabs and can be swept in combat. They are available in 20 man squads and have RP. With Zahndrekh, you can bring them in automatically when your opponent brings something in from reserve, and they can assault after that making them a HUGE distraction. Give them Counter-charge and they have a ton of attacks. Put them with a Destroyer Lord, and they get a ton of re-rolls. Not that these justify taking them, but thought I'd mention it since they are still effectively Warriors which is what you asked about.

(which reminds me, what do you guys think of meatsheilding scarabs? worth the points or a decent sacrifice?)

I'm all for it depending on the size of the unit. They make great tarpits and can obliterate vehicle armor and even many monstrous creatures. You get one unsaved wound on your opponent and that model loses its armor save for good, against things like the Eldar wraithlords and Thunderwolf Cavalry, you'll be glad you slowed them down and ecstatic if they don't have their ridiculous armor. I say they're very "worth the points"

I'm not overly sure about this set up. Cron wise, blobs that big should always have a resorb in them. In a unit that size, it was well worth its points.

I have had very large warrior numbers on the board, but generally have two ghost arks when I do that. A 20 warrior blob backed up by two ghost arks repair barge and resorb can be very hard to kill. (unless someone drops tripple helchickens on you) The arks also let you run a couple of destructeks with lances for the high str low ap shot. I also run a stalker in this set up to get TL for my mass shooty.

One AB might not be enough for Anti air.. and yes you might be able to glance one out of the air with the warriors with enough shooting, but that leaves the rest of their army to rofl stomp you.

Same thing for tanks. Your range is 24, most armor out there has 36" or higher range so can very well keep out of your range and just drop shots into your units. They will likely focus fire one unit at a time. You don't have anything to close the gap fast enough.

I would likely change out the HQs for generic olords to save you some points. ( you can buy a solar pulse for night fighting) I would also drop one of the 20 warrior units and one of the immortal units. This should free up at least 600pts. which will allow you to pick up the arks.. and some more barges... and a scythe for your immortals.
