First Time Painter, Need Critque's

Assembling my Tau army I decided to paint the inside of my devilfish before assembling I am really glad that I did. I feel like I learned quite a bit about how the paint acts and mixes, etc. Especially on large flat surfaces. Below are some pictures from the devilfish and I'm open to critiques, what to add, what to do better etc.

Here is the side hatch, I haven't painted the rifles yet to glue into the slots as I'm not sure what color/colors I'm going to use. Also this was the first experience in gemming. I didn't have a fine detail brush.

Here is the rear hatch. I just painted the windows tonight. I learned a lot from the above window and got a fine detail brush, that helped immensely:

Inside. I used a layer color for the orange. I had trouble with it being splotchy until the last coat I gave it tonight which I really thinned down. I'm going to use a base color orange and then the layer orange from now on and see how that works out. I think I did 3 thin layers, a somewhat thicker layer, and this final very thin layer.

I experimented with the wash on the floor first. I think I got a little carried away on the seats.

And finally I was wondering if I could get some opinions on how to paint the outside. I started painting the engine. My color scheme is Troll slayer orange and a 50/50 mix of black and dawnstone. I'm afraid of either doing too much orange, or too much dark gray.

Thanks for taking a look. I will appreciate any tips, tricks, or criticism

Paint looks a little thick in areas but fine in others. Fixing this will stop the textured look that's especially present in the first photo.

You did layer the orange but still had trouble; maybe try some other kinds of thinners like les' wash recipe, or some acrylic medium? I'd probably always do thin though and see if you can fix the blotchiness as it's easier to go further when you haven't gone too far in terms of thickness.

Overall, a very nice job. The only problem I see is the thickness of paint and orange over black will always be a problem as Oranges and yellows tend not to cover well and the black just amplifies the translucency. You might experiment with various Base paints as a pre-step to your orange. I don't know what the corresponding color is, but Tau Sept Ochre or even Dheneb Stone could be good options.

I picked up Jokero Orange which is a base color. I'll be using the base then layer next to see how it turns out.

Million wrote:The catchlights you've done in the twin windows of the door are in opposite corners.
Painted the cockpit guy tonight. Used the base orange then the layer orange. Worked much better. I think I need to do three coats base then the layer. This was two base, 3 layer.
