Tyrants are fairly good at close combat without having to take the bonesword/lash whip combo. It would seem a shame to lose the extra 6 twin linked strength 6 shots that you could otherwise have with the above combo.

Heavy venom cannon isn't very reliable. Stranglethorn cannon won't get as many hits on target as the devourers (and it isn't any better at killing things).

Many people use the fleshborer hive arms from the Tyrannofex kit as devourers, which is much easier than converting them into one pair of arms.
Then if you have enough points, throw on the Preferred Enemy bubble and keep the HT near units that roll lots of dice, such as devilgaunts or gargoyles.

The flyrants alone accounted for a good 40% of my kills. They destroyed my friends night scythes in 2 turns (one of them started on the field thanks to his C'Tan).
