Review - Secret Weapon Miniatures Blasted Marsh bases

Hey all. This is a quick review of my latest purchase from Secret Weapon Miniatures.

I've never purchased resin bases before, but after browsing, I was very impressed by SWM's pieces, at least what I could see of them. During my browsing, I had a pretty specific idea of what I was looking for. I live in a region of picturesque wetlands, and I always feel that marshes are under-represented on miniatures. (I think it's something about working with water that puts people off.) Seemed like a lot of work to sculpt each one individually, so I was willing to fork up some money to get bases where most of the work was already done.

Pricewise, Secret Weapon is a bit on the high side from what I found. Ten dollars gets ten 25mm bases (or five 40mm bases). Forgecraft and Base X of War both offer bases for lower prices, and Dragonforge offers them for the same price, but in all of these cases, the bases don't appear to be as detailed (in my opinion). I'm willing to pay a slightly higher price (and the price, from what I've found, is indeed only slightly higher) for quality. In addition, these are the ONLY wetlands bases I found.

Fortunately, SWM offers a bundle pack (and they appear to be the only retailer selling resin bases who does so). As long as you need all the bases in the bundle (and it turns out I could make use of all of them) then you wind up saving 10% for five selections. (4 bucks.) If I had my druthers, I'd be able to pick which base sets I purchased to get the discount, but for this purchase, it worked out alright. I'm going to have to purchase another forty to fifty 25mm bases, and six to ten more 40mm ones, which would make a mix-n-match system much more useful in the future, but we can't have it all, right?

The shipment arrived very quickly (inside four days), and was well packaged, so I would definitely trust them to ship delicate materials. Here's a quick pic of what I actually got out of the bag.

As you can see, no miscasts or damaged bases. The quality is just as advertised (high!), and looks just like the pictures on their websites. I've never worked with resin before, so I wasn't sure how much flash I was going to have to trim off. After all was said and done, though, it didn't turn out to be a whole lot (and the resin cleans up WAY easier than plastic does.) For an objective assessment of your own, I submit the following picture, which shows the entirety of the flash I got from twenty 25mm bases and five 40mm ones.

Now, some extensive modification is going to be done to these bases. I'm going to paint, add scenery, and eventually add water effects to these bases. As things progress, I will update this thread. Pretty satisfied so far, and I hope that the finished product lives up to my expectations! (I also hope this helps other people decide whether or not to use SWM's products.)

They look really good. Secret Weapon is the only place I have seen swamp bases as well (looking at them for a Minions army). Can't wait to see what you turn them into.
