Sons of Medusa WIP - need some helpful feedback

Hi guys,

So, the Sons of Medusa chapter have captured my interest lately and i'm slowly working through my tactical squad box painting them trying to work out the best was to do so.

Here are the first 3 guys:

Firstly, the colour is off. I noticed this when i finished them, they are a darker more 'salamander' coloured green. I guess this is from when i was airbrushing the green straight over the black primer, in future i will highlight the primer with grey then white. Perhapse that'll brighten it up?
Similar story with the helmet. It's a little bit darker than i'd hoped for. I'm going to invest in grey primer as soon as possible.
This was also my first time using an oil wash - on the first mini only. Not realising how aweful the smell of White Spirit was, and making the mistake of trying to wash the paint off my brush and hands using water, I found it to be a horrible experiance. I would cope with it if i could get the desired result, but no matter how hard I tried, every time i wiped the qtip over the mini, the wash just wasn't coming off like it does in the handful of youtube vids i've watched. The qtip just smothered more white spirit on (to the point where there were stupidly large pools of it on the mini), i'd appreciate any and all advice on using the oil washes. The result (when it works) is fantastic. The other 2 minis are done using Nuln Oil, which i think contributes to the darker colour - see the last pic, the 2 nuln oil washed minis are alot darker than the oil washed mini.
I also played around with brushing on pigment, and stippling it into the boots, base, gun and shadowed areas. I'm not sure how it comes across in the picture, but it looks ok in person. A little more practice and it'll start looking good.
Also the basing was new to me, the first time i've used cork and GF9 spongey stuff (what is it?). I brought a meter and a half roll of cork, and seeing how much i've used compared to how much is left, i think it's safe to say i'm sorted for life. I think the reds are browns in the autumn basing is a good idea, considering the model is going to be predominantly green. I'm not sure about the cork though, maybe drybrush it again with a different shade of grey? I did stipple some pigment into it, maybe put a little more in it?

Thanks for taking a look guys. I'd appreciate any help your willing to offer regarding the points i made above, and any observations / suggestions you have.

Thanks,
Zambo
