Warlord titan build from cardstock pattern

A Warlord titan has been something that I've wanted for a while, mostly because it is supported in the rules but there will almost certainly never be a production kit for it. I've drooled over the fantastic scratchbuilds, but I've always got a huge backlog of modeling projects (mostly orks) so I didn't expect to get around to it. Then a friend pointed me to the templates designed for scratchbuilding the various titans here. However, unlike the other two, the Warlord plans come with no instructions on assembly whatsoever. The parts are named and there are thankfully numbered points to show where some pieces are designed to attach to others, but as far as visual aids, I was out of luck. So I decided to catalog my construction with photos in case it could be of assistance to anyone else trying to use these plans. The fact that I am winging it, combined with the fact that this is my first attempt at a papercraft project, means that I don't expect this to be too visually appealing, but if I get a usable stand-in for a Warlord, I'll be satisfied. I should probably start trying to round up players for an Apocalypse game now, considering how long it takes to synchronize everyone's schedules....

The plans start off with the feet. Here we have the center part of the foot and the two sections that make up each toe.

Already we have a little fun undocumented feature. I noticed that one of the fold lines was a bit different, being a dot-dash-dot pattern instead of just dashes. As I was preparing to fold, I realized that it was the line for the reverse angle in the middle of the joint section (where the indentation is). So apparently that style of line means to fold the opposite direction. I'll keep an eye out and see if it features on any other pieces.

And here we have the way that I think the parts are supposed to go together, given that there is no guide.

I haven't glued it yet, and if anyone has a suggestion about a better way to align the toe bits, feel free to speak up. More pics later once I've assembled the rest of the toes and have a complete foot.

Foot pics, as promised. Haven't glued them yet, mainly because I haven't settled on the arrangement of toes yet. Here are the contenders:

The plans claim to be based on the illustration of the Warlord on its Apocalypse rules page, but the feet clearly are not. The last design is obviously intended to be mirrored between the feet. I'm still not too sure about it though. My inclination is to go with the first, or perhaps to duplicate the toe bits page and add a fourth toe front and center to give it a proper chicken foot. Any opinions?

I've seen those instructions before, I didn't use them because I was looking for a different version of the titan. But I've always wondered how the finished product would look. Anyways, just make sure it's got some structural rigidity so it can support it's own weight. Good luck, can't wait to see how it turns out.

Also, yes the chicken foot design is probably your best bet, alternatively you could do 8 toes per foot to make it more stable and stuff.

So on the next few pages.... Wait. What is this?

Fantastic. Separated by several pages of shin pieces, so I didn't notice them when I was trying to figure out the toe configuration. Now I've got a glued foot that I'll need to disassemble. Not gonna worry about that just now, though. First I'll get the shin constructed.

I skipped photographing the shin top by itself, but here it is attached to the main part of the shin below and the (not-yet fully folded) knee above.

Looks decent from this angle.

Not so much from the other side. The shin top attaches to its neighbors with sawtooth tabs, and getting them to all line up neatly and adhere was a bit beyond the capability of the current build quality. The connections look worrisome, but feel somewhat secure. I am going to reinforce it from the inside though:

We'll see if that actually helps at all. I may also wrap an extra layer around the outside of the joins to hide the awful lack of meeting up that they did.

Things aren't going especially well at this juncture. I'm going see how much fixing I can do for the shin, and assemble the rest of the toes for the other foot and see how I like the looks of it assembled with all of the pieces. So we may or may not be back to square one!
