Deepstrike a Necron wraith unit

Hi Dakka,

With an increasing number of ADL + Quad combos plus an increasing number of shots being directed at my wraiths on the way up the board, I figured the combo below would be worth a shot.

The idea is to split opponents fire and to shake up their battle plan, by dropping wraiths into their backfield on their turn using Zahndrek Phased Reinforcement power. this is really works best when going second (because if you are going first you don't need to risk this). Full list below (note this is for example and is quite high point value - no comments on the list please).

Spoiler:

1999 Points

**HQ** (465)
Zahndrek
Royal Court
VeilTek
Stormtek
Lightningtek (Stormtek + Lightning)

DestroyerLord (SW,MSS)

**Elite** (95)
5 x Deathmark

**Troop**(659)
10 X Warrior, Ghost Ark
6 x Warrior, Night Scythe (Stormtek)
8 x Tesla Immortal, Night Scythe (LightningTek, Zahndrek)

**Fast Attack**(450)

5 x Wraith (3 coils) DestroLord here
4 x Wraith (3 coils)
5 x Scarabs

** Heavy Support **(330)

1x Anni Barge
1x Anni Barge
3x Canoptek Spyder

So, the plan would go (note I'm only putting in the moves for the key units in this strategy)

T1
Opponent turn (Does stuff, but because nightfight and Necrons a long way away, nothing much happens (I hope!))
Necron Turn
1) Deathmarks start on table, along with Wraith unit 1, scarabs and spyders.
2) Deathmarks veil to marked target and despair, shoot and kill it
2) Wraith unit 1, scarabs and spyders run up board

T2
Opponent turn
1) Opposing player calls up reserves!
2) Using phased reinforcements, wraith unit 2 appears in backfield within assault range of ADL squishy targets.
3) opponent has to allocate fire to different units
Necron turn
1) Wraith 1 & 2 plus scarabs etc assault.

I'm looking for comments on the value of deepstriking wraiths, particularly on the opponents turn.

Thanks!

Re:Deepstrike a Necron wraith unit

I do something similar, but I do everything turn 1. Basically, run Obyron and use the fact that he can deep strike within 6" of Zandrekh to your advantage. For example, Zandrekh and a veil-tek are in whatever group you'd like him to be in, they deep strike close to where you'd like your wraiths to be (but far enough away that you won't mishap), and then Obyron and the Wraiths he's leading veil/deep strike without mishap 6" closer to the enemy. They also get a run phase to spread out and get in better position. Obyron will be out in front of the wraiths during your opponent's shooting phase, tanking the small arms fire for the wraiths while LOS the AP2 or better shots. The only down-side is Obyron slows the unit down, but he doesn't have to after the initial veil-move, as you can just have him detach from the unit and solo-attack a target of opportunity, join Zandrekh's unit, etc...

Your phased reinforcements idea is somewhat of a wash as far as getting your wraiths where you'd want them. If you're going up against someone you KNOW will have deep striking units on turn 1 (Drop pod assault, for example), then it's a decent way to get into your enemy's backfield (if you don't mishap) poised to strike, but if you're waiting until your enemy's turn 2 reinforcements to arrive, then your wraiths won't be assaulting until turn 3, and that's WAY too late for a unit that has the potential to be in assault on turn 1 if deployed normally.

If you're biggest fear is your wraiths getting shot up before they can do their work, deep striking them in on your enemies turn makes them even bigger targets than normal, as they'll be all bunched up and ready for a large blast plate to maximize wounds against them. Also, wraiths being bullet magnets is one of the best things about them. If your enemy isn't shooting your wraiths. they'll be shooting at your troops or another high priority target.

Deepstrike a Necron wraith unit

@voidwraith Thanks, good comment.

I was thinking that this would have a very specific set of circumstances, in particular I'd have to be going second and the opponent would have to have reserves coming in. Then, I'd deep strike the wraiths at the top of Turn 2 (in their turn) and assault in my turn.

However, it is a very specific set of circumstances, so probably limited in usefulness.
