And also remember that a bit of natural shade never goes amiss. If a miniature is very dark in the crevasses then that is fine and dandy. That's the sole reason I undercoat all my minis black. What you can do is paint the parts then use acetone on a Q-tip to polish the paint off the bits you want to join, and cement them with plastic weld.
