Imperial Guard unsung heroes?

Hello Dakka!

I was just thinking, everyone says Imperial Guard are useless cannon fodder but if you actually think about it, most of the fluff about them describes them as a potent force.
I think that without space marines the Imperium might be able to limp on with just the guard as their defense, however I am SURE that without Imperial Guard the Imperium would fall.
My question is are Imperial guard given the credit they deserve?

Captain Knight

It is explicitedly stated in the 6th edition rulebook that without Space Marines the Imperium would have fallen long ago. Without them, the Imperium would slowly crumble. Without the Imperial Guard the fall would be far more rapid. Without the Imperial Navy, it would likely disintegrate even more quickly.

Still, there does seem to a tendency to degrade the Imperial Guard and it's equipment a fair amount on forums (poorly trained, incompetent commanders, flashlights, cardboard armour). In the setting, they generally seem to get the respect they deserve. Some of the fans of the hobby have a less appreciative view of them.

For every Chekhov who sends in the next wave to die and just make the enemy run out of munitions and achieve victory, there's another commander (Straken, Creed) who uses more complicated tactics and leadership that further values the lives of their men.

As Lord General Castor said: "A Guardsman's LIFE is to die. If both groups concentrated their forces the SM would make a large city but not a hive city. They fight where they know they will probably die in a horrific way with little to no support due to the supply lines normally going through the warp and the communications being erratic at best. They do this knowing that the millions of guard sacrificed for the victory will get little to no credit whereas the few hundred SM that bothered showing up will be honored as god-like heroes for their half a dozen raid operations. Wars are rarely won by destroying an objective or two, they are won by wearing away your enemies will to fight until they no longer have the will to fight. Killing a leader can help but they are usually replaced and the war continues (heck they even managed to replace Horous). Alternately, enemies like tyranids, necrons, daemons, etc. will only be delayed at best by destroying any few objectives.
Imperial Guard unsung heroes?

Then came those posters and now you got the "Flashlight carrying, cardboard wearing idiots lead around by bigger idiots".

That might be the case fr newer players but when I started playing during the EoT campaign the Guard was very much seen as "flashlights lol" and it's only rcently I see people giving them any sort of respect. I think this has more to do with the fact that before the current codex the last good Guard list was the list in the back of the 3rd edition rulebook. All through 3rd, 4th and part of 5th they were mediocre at best.

You guys realize there are MILLIONS of regiments out there right? Some are career soldiers who thrive on being professional like the Cadians or the Mordians. Some may lack discipline, but know what it takes to get the job done anyways, like Catachans or the Steel Legion (who is primarily made up of hive gangers) You've got your poorly trained human wave attacks (valhallans) Your warrior culture (Vostroyans) Your career light infantry (Gaunt's Ghosts) Your siege warfare specialists (Death Korps of Krieg) Your elite airborn devisions (Elysians) etc. etc. etc. There is no one description for the Imperial Guard except that they're made up of human beings and they're not space marines. So there are highly professional units just like there are illiterate conscripted units that are only good for canon fodder. That's been the Imperial Guard's shtick for years.

As for whether or not the Imperium needs space marines or not, they're a necessary evil. The Imperial Guard is a massive force, and takes time to deploy. The Space Marines are mobile, fast, decisive, and can hit weakpoints quickly. They're the ideal stopgap force. They're the guys who can show up to a planet, link up with surviving PDF, and then keep things under control until the Imperial Guard show up and take over. Then the space marines head off to the next hotspot for more glory. If the Imperium is on the attack, Space Marines make excellent shock troops to charge in, create a gap, and keep it open long enough for the IG to exploit it and take the ground.

Without the other, neither organization would be able to function nearly as well as they do now. They know what they do best, and when they can't do something, the other steps in.
