grey knights painting

Hi guys !

After habing painted CSM and tyranids for years, I am beginning a new army . Grey Knights. I will use "metallic" paints : Iron breaker, Boltgun Metal and Runfang Steel for the armor. I usually have problems painting with this kind of paint : I find it is difficult to obtain a uniform color. That is why I have in mind to :
1 - undercoat them with plate mail metal primer from The Army Painter.
2 - a layer of Ironbreaker on all the armor
3 - wash with Nuln Oil
4 - darken with Boltgun metal
5 - Adding lining effects with Runefang Steel.
6 - Use Nuln Oil where needed.
7 - for the golden parts, overbrush with shinning gold then washed with... have no idea, can you help me ?

Then, do you glue your models and after you paint them, or do you undercoat them, glue them then paint them, or third : undercoat and paint before assembling ?

Thanks !

PS : if you have ideas to upgrade my process, feel free to explain me how !

For the gold pick a good base brown instead of the silver tones. I know it would seem like it will go onto another metallic well, but it won't. Lay down the brown (darker if you want a darker gold, lighter if you want brighter gold). Then you can either start with Balthasar on darker browns, or I've had good results starting with Shining gold on lighter browns. Also, for metallics (I'm painting Doom Eagles... all metallic power armor), sometimes they seem to be thin enough once you've added a touch of water or medium, but if you aren't getting even coverage, add a bit more water so that the metallic particles can disperse better through the medium.

Meecham, Take a look at the GK in my gallery and let me know if they look like how your picturing it.

Personally I like a middle brown for basing gold (old bestial brown was my favorite). After the base coat, I put down the first layer of gold, than a light wash with sepia or an other brown ink/wash of your choice, then I drybrush a highlight of the original gold used.

The brown wash before highlighting really makes the gold lettering on the GK shoulder pads "POP".
